No way ! Leave it alone ! Perfect as is
Going to leave the engine as it is now but have fitted parabolic springs , new shocks and I’m fitting it with LWB rims and 7.50 tyres still in an old school pattern though . I found this pic on the net and quite liked the look , still original looking but better .

Those are one ton rims. Normally found on a forward control LR.
IMO There are three choices of engine in an 80". All fit. The earliest 'improvement' was the 140hp Daimler V8. The second two are the Rover 2.2TC @ 115hp & the inevitable 3500 Rover V8 with 161hp.
Steve Parker did a conversion plate for the 3500 & with a RR NS exhaust manifold it slipped in fairly easy. Same g-box mounts, just home made engine mounts & exhaust. The early gearbox is fine just use second if you want to be off the line quickly. You'll need an ex military rear axle as these had a strengthening bar welded on& LWB front brakes or a complete axle here too.
The 22TC is even easier to fit & is a really nice little conversion. Just getting hold of these is a little difficult now.
I looked at a double six but it just wouldn't go in......
The 3500 with 3.5:1 ratio diffs ran about 9 second 0 to 60 times, which was up with a Frod 3.0l Capri.......several surprised Capri owners.:ROFLMAO:
The 2.2 with 4.7:1 diffs was quite a good trialler. Light & responsive when needed.
Still a good day out http://www.awdc.co.uk/

Im after one just like that ! Lovely things
I saved mine from the scrap man and rebuilt it 20 years ago , it’s been in storage for the last 10 but now my boys have decided it’s the perfect vehicle for pulling birds down the coast this summer so it’s in the workshop having a birthday . At least if they pull driving this they have got someone with a bit of style.

I've me eye on a 2.5 nasty aspirated 89 110 which if I get it will put a 300tdi engine in ans a disco transferbox, and convert the Sailsbury to disc brakes..................

Wouldn't consider the shoe brakes good enough for the Tdi engine..................

Yeah me neither, i have built the 2a on std 10" drum brakes as i have converted to 11" in the past and had nothing but trouble with them with leaking wheel cylinder's both good makes and BP ones so once the rebuild is complete i plan to convert the 2a to discs all round using the Heystee conversion kit expensive i know but worth it in the end

I may have missed it - but what are you doing to the vehicle to get 130 bhp and 40 mpg?

The engine is 111bhp the tdi in the 2a swb wont have power steering and a fixed fan gaining about 20bhp plus the 2a is rear wheel drive on the road so not driving a front axle round all the time and going off my last one i did i got 40 mpg on a run hardly do town work as i live very close to the M60, M62, and the M56 plus the A34, A556 and A6

We had a fleet of Land Rovers when I was a kid. Dad's personal vehicle was a SWB Series 2 with the canvas top, unfortunately he sold that while I was still at school
This Series 1 is the only one left, I bought back from the person who bought it at the clearing sale when we sold the place I grew up on
It will get restored one day. Not to concourse or perfect condition, but just to a useable / road registrable state, to reflect the history & story behind it
Personally, I hate to see old cars restored to "as new" condition, I love seeing the patina of age & the history of them.

Just a bit of air in the front tyre and clean the windscreen then good to go!
Mind you, that shovel is in a poor state, you need to look after your tools!

3.54 diffs, high ratio transfer and o/d?!?!?! I take it you’re not planning on towing anything or going up any sort of incline then?

Not heavy towing but steep hills yes but i dont see it being a problem for a tdi in a series, with my last one it had everything i have stated but without the 3.54 diffs and i really don't see a problem

It’s not the engine or diffs that will give out, it’s the the rest of it. Can’t see your o/d lasting more than 5 miles like that. You’re pouring twice the hp through the o/d and gear box than it was designed for and increasing the gearing at the other end.

Plus, the high ratio transfer mod (Ashcroft I’m assuming) is designed to replace the o/d, not work with it.

I’m no engineer and I’m sure there are those on here far more qualified to comment, but I can see it being reduced to a pile of very expensive shrapnel on the floor I’m afraid.
