Margin - not yield. Lots of good low cost growers out there. The latter does help the former though. :)
Fair enough, been discussed many times on here (margin v yield) but if I am not aiming for over 8t/ha from winter feed barley I will never make much profit. (hybrid seed cost, decent rent etc already sunk....) whether I make much (or any) over the 8t is another matter but 7.5 is my budget, hope for 8 and anything over 8.5 is a welcome bonus.

I'm aiming for 8t/ha as a second cereal too.

Tower sown October. Needs some N now but not going to get conditions until March.

Little bit of ally max and starane later on after its liberator in Oct.
Probably 2 fungicides of Fandango/Siltra or something and some CCC
168 kg/N plus Sulphur. Maybe some FYM on top if we get a dry week in early march

Don't intend to make it more of an expensive or complex job than that really as long as weather isn't to rubbish (no sun and not too much rain - sun being more important)

Looks like about 7mm so far. Really windy now but even another 5mm is not going to spoil it. But we did cut back the fert rate somewhat just in case it turned Biblical.

Mine similar but omitting ally max and with the addition of more PGR.

Not putting fert on but the ground travelled well on Tuesday this week on a mix of direct drilled and min tilled soils. I was a bit surprised really as it walked wet but the sprayer travelled well considering.

If you are growing feed winter barley surely you have to be aiming for over 8t/ha or it won't add up financially? I certainly wouldn't be starving it this early if it looked decent. 160units is quite high mind, I think I will only do 145.
I am aiming for 150 Units (188 KgsN/ha) on my Hybrids (2nd White straw) crop. I think this is what Syngenta are suggesting. Hopefully it should do well above the 8t/ha.

I've also got some 1st Conventional Tower Barley that I'll aim for (125 Units 156 kgsN/ha) on. Wouldn't surprise me that this will yield as well as the Hybrid, maybe better.

It amazes me how high Winter Barley yields can go if you can grow it on gutsy land. In 2006 a dry year with a very dry harvest we grew a crop of Saffron on heavy land after peas with just 125 Units (156 KgsN/ha). Everything went well from Drilling to Harvest and it yielded 4.4 tons/acre (11 tonnes/ha) at 11% moisture!

Never done it since, but got pretty close to it once or twice! Saving tillers is the name of the game. And stopping it from going yellow in Feb/March.

Any of you guys using liquid worried about scorch on dewaxed leaves after that storm yesterday? Still going on wheat here and travelling well. OSR nozzles just turned up so that will be next.
