what’s more irritating is that I scrapped two rear axles last year that I had kept for nearly ten years!! The casings and trumpets etc went to China!!! Typically I may have an use fir them now!!!

I am not disputing that old IH tractors start better with new style glow plugs but I have never heard of problems with original type glow plugs either and if I had a 275 with starting problems I would not hesitate in fitting original type glow plugs and checking and fixing original circuit and if necessary fit new pistons and liners because engine parts are cheap and that is all I am saying on this subject

have you had any experience of the new type of glow plugs, I suggest not, as it is as big a jump forward as going from a starting handle to electric start

We had a 374 which was essentially the same thing and we never had a problem with starting it on the original type glow plugs. A big end went because some one had not put the purolator oil filter cartridge in correctly and then we had the head gasket leak where a rubber seal went but apart from that no probs. I remember those pre-combustion chambers well. Its one of the tractors I wish we had kept probably went for not much money when it was sold.

Somewhere in my travels I thought I saw a kit to convert the old girl to a spin-on filter to hopefully avoid that problem, especially for when I get older and stupider. For me cost is the biggest motivator for the change.

The home made ones I have are not long enough either but dies not seem to be a problem. They were a collection of s/h plugs from Ford, VW/ Citreon diesel engines etc. Technically the probe of the plug needs to extend into the combustion chamber just underneath the injector nozzle for the fuel to be injected over the hot probe to create a flam. I’ve had no bother with that 275 since and before with original plugs it was either repeated heating and cranking or a tow to get her going, starts straight away ever since.
Okay. I did some checking on line last night and found part numbers for longer plugs that would fit my bushings. Checked with my supplier this morning and I'm going to have to buy them on-line if I want them.So the Jetta plugs will go in and we'll see what happens but not likely today. Woke up to 6" of snow and -8*C so Other things need doing first.

At least yours has fenders!! I don't even have those.

All of mine are now wired through a four position lucas ignition barrel same as 276/434s etc. They’re not technically original but practical without adapting anything, just use the existing hole in dash panel.

I have a McCormack international 276 that was a poor starter and forever burning out heater plugs
I took the old heater plugs to an engineer and he made me threaded bushes and I put 4 Volkswagen 1.9 tdi heater plugs in and wired them in parallel with a relay switch
Starts every time with 2 seconds heat and you can keep the heat on if it’s running a bit lumpy on cold days

We finally have a running tractor gentlemen. Many thanks to all who helped, especially Mur Huwcun for the ad on ebay and Pennine Plowing for getting them. Put them in and wired them through my new relay which eliminated the pepper pot and original heating handled relay. I turn m key to the start position and hold it for 10 or 15 seconds and start. If it's cold I have to reheat but I can do that while cranking and it only takes a few short bursts of heat and we're running. I had to do some additional rewiring to get it properly sorted and power running where iot was supposed to. I also had to tinker with the timing a bit more. Hopefully #1 son will be along in a da or two and we'll get it spill timed.

In then meantime it runs good enough I can get the chains put on and my snow blade so I'll be ready. I'll also be able to get the shed moved, it's a home made portable one. It's been blocking part of the drive now for 2 winters, getting to be a bit of a pain.

Just an update. Drained a quart of antifreeze out of the crancase today, so I guess the rebuild is on as soon as soon as I get the garage cleaned out to put the tractor in. That will take a while, last time I could park in there was 15 or so years ago.

Looks like you have corroded liners
I know Penine ploughing knows all about engines and I am not being disrespectful in any way but he made out I didn't know what I was talking about when I said it is false economy not to renew liners

I'm always weary of removing IH wet liners due to the unorthodox way they have the o ring groove in the block rather than in the sleeves and that they crack between cylinders, your block is then scrap therefore I will only pull them out if they're leaking or porous. Last one I did the week of the lockdown the sleeve was cracked around the top and all four sleeves popped out easily enough and block at the bottom was in good order, not so at the top!! It's had some loctite sealer around top of sleeves and some rtv sealent with the HG between the cylinders. Unfortunately it's not here therfore it's still awainting it's oil pump and sump before start up!!! Will cross every finger!! :D:D:D
