Bale trailer or low loader?

Looking at swapping our bale trailer (26ft bed) since it’s started to fall to bits. Not sure whether to get a 26ft 15 ton low loader to carry bales and machinery or get a 28 foot bale trailer. Also any suggestions on the best brand for both?

Why not a 28ft low loader? If I was buying I’d get a 28ft hydraulic beavertail from Larrington or Philip Watkins.

We have round bales if that helps

I've recently priced up the same with stow away ally ramps so it could also take a stock box in future, I enquired about a rear steer axle but they say it isn't necessary, do you find it scrubs much/makes hard turning? Are you on 435/50r19.5 tyres

We have a 28ft tri axle, I wouldn’t have a steer axle but I would have air suspension and a lift axle.

Can’t remember tyre size off the top of my head but that sounds about right! Only got it at the start of the year so hasn’t done a great deal, it isn’t hard to turn can put it every where the twin axel 32ft bale trailer went! It handles really well on the road loaded with straw doesn’t rock about just sits there! And we can get both diggers on!!

Interesting, thanks. I'll make enquiries with Stewart

Ours is a Stewart on 435 19.5s, be 10yr old next month. Has had 2 new tyres on the back a year or 2 back as they were worn. We went for a tri axle as loaded with big squares we wanted the stability. But empty / with the cattle body on it’s unnecessary tyre wear, which is why I’d put the money towards a lift axle.

3 commercial axles on a light unladen trailer is also a bit too ‘light’ on the brakes, we have load sensing and ABS but the brakes can be sensitive.

@wuddy Is it hydraulic beavertail or just hydraulic ramps? I'm thinking full beavertail with ally ramps so I can put a stock box on or use for straw without needing a wedge

@Andrew If I just wanted it for straw I'd probably put it on twin axles with 560/45r22.5 for the benefit on land, what does your trailer weigh empty? I wouldn't have thought a low loader would be "too light" but it is relative I suppose. 3 axles on 435 or 445 should be kind enough on tramlines I hope

Why not go for a Kane hydraulic beaver tail ,our silage baler man has one and raves about it.
We have ordered a Herbst equivalent, because they do a 24ft one as opposed to the 26ft Kane.
A very flexible solution.

No idea what it ways empty I’m afraid but 3 commercial axles will stop 30 ton no probs on 22.5” wheels, switch down to 19.5” wheels and there’s more braking force again, on a 4t ish trailer theres not a lot of weight on each wheel when empty. If the brakes never get warm they will glaze and the efficiency is reduced. It’s not a big problem, just another reason I’d have a lift over a steer axle.

SaltnPepper what is the approximate cost of a Hyd beaver tail low loader? Does it make loading a track machine easier safer and less abuse of the tracks?

Used to see a lad in the pig factory with a 32/33' double deck trailer with alloy body & tri axle, was chatting to him one day & mentioned a lift axle, he said the trailer had it, he lifted it on the way home after the first load & never used it again as it pushing the tractor about too much, & lack of brakes.
