What was the store lamb trade like today

Mixed. Short keep stuff good trade and plenty of fat buyers bagging those.

Those forward were mixed as well. I paid £50 for 30kg white faced lambs that came from up the hill a bit.

They should do ok now they are with me on dryer ground with ok grass.

Was trade up because of show lambs ?
I'd say only half a dozen or so, pens of two, made the 'wild' fatstock show prices. The rest of the 'show' lambs wouldn't be much more than the general trade. Averaged out over 1700 lambs, I don't think it would make much difference. Although trade was up on the week for Newark, looking at results at other markets earlier in the week, I'd say the week's trade peaked at about Wednesday and eased off a touch Thurs/Fri/Sat.

Must have been looking at the wrong report tonight.
Cattle back 13 p sheep mostly stand on at 182 p which was high last week due to shows. Numbers were down nearly 70% though, which is probably an effect of the weather.

Most markets had cattle shows last week so thus the averages were artificially high but if you compare the averages today with two weeks ago trade is stronger.

Given the UK kill is around 30,000 cattle per week, the prices from live auctions today are only for around 1,000 or so cattle (and that's when all the reports are in). So if it says back 13p it's from such a small number (3%) of the weekly kill as to be nearly meaningless even if last week's data included show cattle.

Don't think too many cattle will be slaughtered this week given we are so close to Xmas. May be a few more next week to hang over Xmas?

Can't see cattle dropping more than the odd pence or two. They are not about.

Good promotion at Waitrose last Friday. Striploins/Sirloins and Rumps. Meat Counter at Abergavenny Waitrose looked very busy. And with the cold weather helping mince/stewing steak, can't imagine there will be too much carry over.
