Beetroot Post Emergent Weed Control

Hello,

We are having a very wet winter here in our part of Australia, place looks like its in the UK!!

Having a hard time getting good weed control in our beetroot crops.

Pyramin has been useless as a preemergent. Betanal has been hit and miss, mid April it worked very well on our problem weed wild radish, but the next planting two weeks later in failed to knock out the small wild radish. I even went in with the knapsack at a high rate following a week of rain and it had no effect, but the wild radish was 5cm in diameter.

We have Tramat locally which is Ethofumsate, but not keen to use it due to its six month residual on brassica crops like broccoli.

What are UK growers using post emergent to knock out wild radish and other broadleaf weeds in their beet crops?

Thanks in advance.

debut (50% w/w triflusulfuron-methyl.) is good on brassica in fodder beet. i don't know if its safe or legal in beetroot though

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately Trilusulforon-methyl isn't registered in Australia.

Took up the salt solution with a trial in the knapsack. It is winter here and daytime temp ranges 16 to 20 deg. Celsius. How hot does it need to be for the solution to work? Your "hot days" differ to our "hot days".

How long until you see a result with the solution?

Thanks, tried some salt applications, but didn't work as the daytime temp has been 16 to 20 celsius in recent weeks.

Tried yesterday again, at 1 to 3 ratio as daytime temp was 22 celsius. Some burning of wild radish leaves today. Will check again tomorrow. Doing it by knapsack.

Does salt burn the leaves quickly like Spray Seed or over several days?

Wild radish is a big problem spread by a series of floods in recent years.

Does Tramat work on wild radish? Not listed as a controlled weed in Australia, for Tramat.

I see the UK has Goltix which looks effective, but hasn't been released in Oz due to commercial reasons.

Google agriculural salt beet weed control or similar wording and you will find a few articles. There were a few in 1997 qouting Mike May beet herbicide guru. Couple below - but there are more. Register for free access.

The ratio of salt to water is qouted (1 to 3 as you say) and need to add non ionic wetter at 0.1% of solution, or possibly a bit more.
