Indeed. We did that about 20 years ago when the assurance nonsense started getting silly.
If everybody cancelled their NFU membership it would send a serious message and you don't need to be an NFU member to sell your produce. I really can't understand why anybody is still a member and what they actually think they are getting for the money.
I think there's something about being able to say you are a member of the Nfu, that's all there is to it.

Stickers not required. Your contract with merchants say assured. They have your number. I've sent plenty of grain this year with just the ACCs number written in the box. They just type it in at their end and computer says yes.

All merchants have access to the RT database of members and where they are certified. Its all listed in their privacy policy that says they will give you details to pretty much anyone with a legitimate interest.

I don’t actually think working farmers are the majority of their membership anymore otherwise they would be fighting for them.It seems to me they are more likely to be representing their corporate, retail, hobby farmer and those ex city dwellers who have bought a countryside pad with a few acres. The tie up with RT is simply mind blowing and years ago the old NFU would be fighting Jim Moseley et al to prevent more bureaucracy and stress for farmers.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
