If say I wanted to buy a tractor or forklift over the phone at a farm sale and I am unlucky enough to but the machine who has responsibility for the security of it until such time as I pick it up?

Pretty sure its your responsibility after the hammer fall however might be different with current covid restrictions.

The auctioneers should have a booklet freely available publishing their conditions of sale. I have never forgotten my solicitor telling me, "You cannot be bound by the terms of a contract of which you have no prior knowledge". So if you ask, they should make them available to you.

Dont know anyone local who would remove it on sale day? Personally I wouldnt want it unattended for a minute after the fall if the hammer, if it was a tractor I really wanted. If you will not be too disappointed if it is stripped, tampered, stolen, then insurance should sort it. NFUM cover our machinery wherever in the Country it is, apparently.

We sold a Lely MoCo at collective sale years ago. Dropped it off day before sale as a lot go for a nosy anyhow and returned morning of sale with PTO shafts and fitted them. I was stood next to it and gave auctioneer the nod and it was sold. I pass the yard on way to,work everyday and noticed for over a week that the mower was still in same place, they even had a couple of livestock sales anweek happen and yard was always full of pickups and trailers surrounding the aband looking mower. anyhow near on two weeks later the purchaser contacted us to accuse us of not including a PTO shaft with the mower,as he had just been to pick it up......

A few years back, I despatched my Missus to a farm sale, to buy a bale squeeze, which she duly did (along with some "off list" stuff too ☹). Paid on the day, but when I went to collect it the following weekend, it was missing. I moaned mightily to the auctioneers and iirc they and the vendor stood the loss between them. The most annoying part of it was that the vendor was ALMOST certain that he knew who had taken it.
