Its a good idea it would be better if it was compulsory but in some herds it will make no difference apart from money spent and another bit of paper
so stop looking down your noses at all those that don't do it

It would make several differences in that vaccination could be reduced or stopped and the valuation of stock may even a little more a across areas. Along with the fact that a well participated scheme delivers factual evidence that farmers are interested in helping themselves and not just waiting for free help.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not campaign for it, because the more who don't declare clear herds, the more it boosts the businesses of those who do, particularly when there is a national difference to draw a line for us.
That doesn't stop me from seeing obvious facts though.

We've been officially clear since December, after 12 months of clear ear sample testing, so have therefore been clear for about 18 months ( and have blood tested all animals born back to about 5 years ago , that weren't ear sampled).

Difficult to say if there are noticeable general health benefits , obviously there will have been abortions and dead births avoided, but as to pneumonia and scours being reduced I don't know.

there won't be if you never had it
We did have it - it was much more difficult to eliminate than the original briefing meetings at the start of the Scottish campaign suggested. This despite us never buying in. However the infection rate in Ayrshire/Wigtownshire and other dairying areas , started high, and with little cropping and high cattle populations , the risks were all around.

I see AHDB are pushing BVD free England in Bulletin which came today, good to see.
anyone else sighed up ?
751 farms signed up on Feb 23 according to the last news letter .
To my way of thinking still a fairy poor response, though with the big round of meetings, perhaps things are now moving on,I hope so.

We are signed up. In our second year of tissue sampling. Had 2 PIs last year and wasn't allowed to get rid (don't ask- shortsighted senior management). Had one this year (so far) which went up the kennels today. It was out of a bought in unvaccinated cow. Hopefully that'll be it for us now we are closed.

I will ask but you don't have to tell, what did you do with them then ?
That's ok. Isolated them with their mothers in a paddock all summer. One downfall was TB testing in July when had to get another group back to the buildings and held them in the pen there and thought it'd be ok to run the PIs past the clean group. We had vaccinated all our own breeding stock pre turnout but there was a group of cows and calves we bought at turnout so i tissue tagged the calves which all came back clear but thought I could get away without vaccinating the cows. Error.
Hope someone can learn from our mistakes and it only takes running a PI past a pregnant cow in the right stage to create another PI.
Funnily enough I went to one of the BVD free meetings and asked about the risk at market of mixing stock of unknown health and could BVD be spread by a PI or even TI running down the passageway past naive animals. I was told the risk is minimal. I have proof that sh!t can and will happen though.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
