Do you spray aphids in spring barley

I was suprised when my agronomist advised against treatment.

No, I don't & you'll get roasted around here for suggesting it! I'm in a high risk BYDV region (south west) too.

Why?? Do you regularly get BYDV in spring barley? Serviced agronomist??

No, not at all. Just wondered why in a high risk area anybody wouldn't. I was going over it anyway.
I'm obviously still a bit old fashioned as I thought it would benefit the crop.
I will ask questions next time.

I'll be gentle! Have you ever had BYDV in untreated spring barley? You're a higher risk than the east end of Dorset where I am. The plants are only at risk until the end of tillering which is imminent.

Good question!
I stopped growing Spring Barley for a few years but now yields are better I began to try again. Always used to see virus like leaves on plants but I don't know if it affected yield tbh.
Agronomist said do it so I did.

They haven't told me to jump of a cliff yet.

Yes totally devasted all our spring barley in 1986 & sprayed ever since.

Independent agromist never discussed it with him, usually just got on with it.

Was there a green bridge effect possibly that knackered that field?

You definitely do always get some minor BYDV in Cornish SB crops as BYDV is everywhere, especially following a mild winter. But if it is flying aphids on the wing in the spring this damage doesn't warrant spraying as the crop grows too quickly before it spreads. That is different to dirty stubbles or ploughed grassland planted too quickly.

54 acre 1987 not 1986 it was after the wet autumn of 1986.

Some after potatoes, some after swedes & the rest after cereals some autumn ploghed some spring ploughed.

It all turned yellow terrible blow for us at the time.
