Cabbage seed weevil

Didn’t spray last year’s OSR with any insecticide. Unfortunately there was a lot of damage from brassica pod midge. Haven’t used any insecticide on this year’s OSR either but wondering if I should spray for cabbage seed weevil this year?

I never found the spray had any effect one way or the other. I think it came down to timing it right, which was impossible as egg laying was over a protracted period so the one shot knock down spray was practically useless, unless you make a living selling it.

Anybody including an insecticide in their OSR flowering spray this week?
Ask yourself, should those two words be in the same sentence?

Impossible to monitor as you'd have to walk through the whole crop, not just get an idea from headlands. And when anything approaches (person, tractor) they drop to the ground. Also, pod midge don't need the weevil to make holes, they can make their own.

There are the reasons not to add an insecticide! Pollen beetles will pollinate your crop. The ladybird will eat a lot of aphids. I can only see a few seed weevils.

EDIT: I mean seed weevil....!

Blood crop has too many pests  Seed weevil
Sad but true!

3-4 seed weevils per plant in the crop away from the headland? If so, I will check but it sounds like you are above the threshold for treatment. Mavrik is arguably the least harmful to beneficials I.e. pollinators. Never mix pyrethoids like Mavrik with triazoles as they disable the repellency for bees.

Usually, the flowering fungicide is when the sprayer engine radiator grille is covered with them, by which time it would mean another pass through the crop causing more damage, so I don't bother 😉
