Market averages for AA and hfd bulls would be about £200 and Hfrs about £150 . If they look like they are out friesians you could add another £20-40 but if they are out of jersey x's or small hfrs calfs you can deduct £50. plus those prices are before market commision is taken off.

at 2 weeks of age we find calves are a little soft, aim for 3 weeks and currently running around £200/260 angus bulls £120/180 angus heifers depending on the individual calf

Got a fair few char, sim, bbx tb restricted calves, rang Mccartney's at ludlow (orange market) they said unsaleable, not wanted, no value, is this right or are there customers out there for them, would appreciate any helpful suggestions.

the answer is, as long as a piece of string. We take calves to 2 mkts, salisbury, and exeter, as well as a few private. Smaller younger calves, at exeter, do not sell the same as salisbury, taken calves to exeter, and been very displeased, same type/size at salisbury, and been stunned, up to £50/60 a calf more, and yet, the bigger stronger calves will make more at exeter. It is more suprising when the bulk of spring calves, are out of grass rats ! But, to us, we want easy calvings, which means smaller, and, again they are a 'by product', and we tend to shift as soon as. Against that, we have a dose of bb's, due nov, and we are going to rear them on a bit.
Under tb, they tend to want to steal them, to be polite, gives you the question, keep, or give away, most cases, unless you are 'set-up' for rearing calves, probably 1st loss, is best loss, and save the work, and hassle.
To answer the question, it's not so easy, farmers are very good at saying the best prices, but not all calves get there, i would suggest, £ 60/70 for hfrs, and £120 for bulls, but that is for ALL calves, and must be looking ok.

McCartneys wouldnt have a buyer at the orange tb sales, most AFU buyers only want strong cattle . Im amazed with the high prices of unrestricted calves this year that more people havent started rearing restricted calves at a discounted price. I suppose you need a fair sized unit to rear calves and keep them until finished. MQ and buitelaar would be worth a phone call

We’ve just gone down with TB today and it’s unlikely our spring F8J8 cows will be clear next spring so will have 100 dairy males, 50 BB and 100 Herefords to get rid of or rear. What sort of prices have people been getting for these TB restricted animals and at what age/weight? Thanks

Buitilar will take the BB but they won't pay a lot. TB herefords and kiwi X bulls will be a real struggle to find a home for.

Having been down with TB way too long, the only saleable option for us are strong stores, suck up loads of money and then sell for a not very special price. A good margin to be made to finish them at an AFU!

Sell them as stong stores to an AFU, you will get near enough the same money selling to an AFU if not a bit more.

It’s a funny old world, some consider calves as a byproduct and want rid of them, I consider them the cream on the job and probably my favourite part of dairy farming.
Sold 3 Hereford bulls last week, 5-6 weeks old all over £300, can’t understand why there’s so many young calf’s sold for little money,
