Campus oilseed rape replacement

To say that a variety lacks vigour (and is therefore only suited to early drilling) is slagging it off in my view. If LG are genuinely saying that it lacks Autumn (or Spring) vigour and we'd be better off with KWS Campus as it is much more vigourous then we shall be cancelling the order!
LG say anastasia is more suited to the late drill slot because it's one of their varieties. I am sure aspire will be fine in the main drilling slot, just not as forward as some in the autumn but they say it should yield more come harvest.

I drilled Campus and Aspire next to each other this time. Couldn’t tell the difference between them through winter. Both looked great until March. Now all my campus has been ravaged by flea beetle larvae and pollen beetle (never seen anything like it) but the Aspire is still going strong. Aspire looks like it’s standing up to the likes of my hybrid. Is Campus more prone to pest damage?...

No. It’s just down to sowing date, moisture etc. My Campus is fine but my Palmedor sown immediately afterwards was eaten in drier soils.

Another area my campus has been hammered by larvae is where it’s drilled into spring barley stubble that has been shaved. Where the stubble is longer the osr is better, especially after wheat. Does longer stubble make it harder to find the plants earlier on?

There have been a lot of posts saying that, yes. I think there’s some truth in it too - the flying flea beetles looking for their next home must have learned to spot nice neat prominent rows of emerging oilseed rape. Good ground cover provided by a nurse crop or stubble could “spoil the view.” Read @Andy Howard ’s Nuffield report on companion and intercropping.

I replaced campus with DK Sequel last autumn - semi dwarf. Wasnt as vigorous through the autumn but a massive amount of pods now without the immense canopy. If all those pods fill, it will be a big crop, but easier on my old combine. Plenty of "ifs" between now and harvest though.

Might try Troy next autumn.

First year growing Expansion here. WOSR looks well in general over here. I must admit that I like the look of Expansion all year, great vigour in it.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
