Cancelling an online sale after acceptance?

the menzies thing does look interesting actually!

Yes i agree the shipping is painful, but in all honesty £85 is cheap if its a single drop and your a 100 mile out from the last drop for a courrier - this is the issue I had - also the highlands are not quick to travel thru, so alot of drivers hit tacho limits and insurance working time limits aswell - I was informed by a friend who hauls grain but used to work for a supermarket subcontractor that 100 miles north of glasgow costs about the same as 200 miles of travel in england once all things such as rest breaks, distance between drops, low item volumes per trip and few back loads - and when theirs a shortage of drivers - it just makes it unattractive.

Their needs to be either a fuel duty cut (paid back with evidence such as filling up in Scottish stations) to haulers' in Scotland, or a reduced tax rate for business that can show they are delivering in the highlands to offset some of the cost.
Sorry, but it's not cheap when the south pays nothing and they stick on am arbitrary £85 because of a line on the map! They could at least try to level it out. Or use multiple carriers for different parts of the route. We do have carriers in Scotland, ye know! I always say, we ought to charge extra on the whisky going south!

I agree as the customer it isnt cheap - but for the busines £85 is quite possibly less than the cost, the arbitary line - i see your point, it doesnt just jump at a single point on the map and that needs addressing - but changing couriers part way is an absolute liability nightmare and is simply a No go from an insurance a liability perspective for a seller - i just would not risk or entertain the idea.

Its really only addresable with making haulage more affordable to the courier in scotland.

That is the service offered by Menzies. If you follow the link in my post #19 above, all is explained.

I have now received a reply from Trading Standards which completely misses the point which is not helped by their not reading my message. Clearly a waste of time trying to deal with these people as I have a very low threshold when it comes to stupidity!

Do you no longer have a reliable local tractor parts supplier? Who will give a competitive price and excellent service.
Other option is try local garage for price from Dingbro or HMP, usually supply within a day.

Why not just buy from a Scottish retailer, surely a battery isn’t hard to find. Support local and all that.
My reasons for buying online are off topic for this thread and, quite frankly, not your business!

As I understand it, there is a legally binding contract here as the battery suppliers accepted my order and got paid which they confirmed. They clearly stated in their advertisement that shipping is paid to anywhere in the UK. It is only then that they decided they can't supply because I am in Scotland. Yes, I have got a refund but that's not the point. I believe that if you make promises and accept the money, you keep them even if that results in a loss. What chaos would follow if everyone did business like this? And there are posters on here who rely on a hand shake! This was all done in writing with a payment up front so there are no doubts.

Perhaps they didn't realise it would cost more until they physically tried to send it. They should probably amend their website now they do know.
You could argue they should just eat the cost and potentially make a loss, but I don't blame them for cancelling if it was a genuine mistake.

If you want to get outraged and pursues it further go ahead, I don't think you'll get far. Lots of deals get cancelled by buyer or seller every day for all kinds of reasons.
Just order one from somewhere else.

I am continuing my search. Interesting that there are several advertising tractor batteries on Ebay with free shipping -- and that includes the Scottish Highlands. The trouble is there is rather a lot of them varying in price from around £100 (including free shipping) to over £600! Prices for the same battery also vary considerably.

What size are you needing? It is worth looking at "Optima" gell type batteries. They are a little more expensive but will keep a starter turning longer than standard ones.
Fitting may need a bit off mod as pole positions are a little different.

There are a lot of scam sites out there too, be careful that you don't lose your money and get nothing.
Is it a hard-to-find battery?
If it's for an Ag machine maybe, ask the question in the Machinery section on here?
