I have a herbal lay but I'm wanting to put a cover crop in over winter for spring barley next year,

What's my best bets for claiming, can I claim them both in this year?
Don't think so. You'd need an autumn 2023 start.

I'm in a similar position. Spring start date. Better claiming cover + no insecticide over clover ley, but herbal ley better than the cover option.

Bit of a funny scenario where you can choose what to claim. I changed the land uses to WW in prep for the autumn in case someone accused me of claiming ipm4 on tg1, even though the system allows it.

All consequences of grass being viewed as a 2nd class crop.

The problem is calander years and farming years often not being aligned... Computer will say no. I would consider applying for herb lay this year and claim the cover crop against the following year but I would want it in clear writing from the RPA that they will accept this. Frankly they should, you achieve the aims of both options even though the cover is established in calander year 1. Of course you cant then apply for anything else in the back end of calander year 2 and remember... you need to replace the herb lay with at least 50% of the year one area somewhere else for year 2.

Thanks for the reminder about replacing 50/ herbal, I have a fare acreage of them so will be within rules (worth a double check though)

1 Payment per Ha per YEAR will be the SFI rules when they change them again at leisure with no comeback.. Unless you have a signed 3yr contract.. In which case enjoy...
