Classic tractor help.

Just about to buy a late 60's tractor. Need to drive it about 7 miles to storage, so it's been registered in the past but we only have two letters of the reg well assuming the plate in the box of bits is correct? It has no V5. Its about £80 to insure it but can we insure off the chassis number?
Can we drive it or best to trailer it?

Trailer it I'm afraid, it needs to be taxed to go on the public highway, otherwise it can be impounded and crushed. This obviously needs a V5c or a new keeper supplement, which if you had I expect you would be getting a new number plate

Thanks that's as we suspected. Any top tips for insurance? It's only a toy won't be doing any work. Going to try vin to reg service to see if we can find the reg. I suspect it's dropped of the data base so will need a full application

I bought an early 70’s imported truck about 7 years ago, so classed as historic, probably the same as you will class your tractor.
Where I got it from wasn’t as secure storage as I had for it, so I wanted it home. I had no reg number as yet, as I had just sent the completed dvla form to obtain one, along with proof any import tax was paid.
My insurance company were happy to insure it on the vin number, and happy for me to drive the 30 mile home, with a copy of the insurance certificate with me.
Fetched it on a Sunday !!

Vey kind of you, unfortunately no results found so joined the club then will apply for a dating cert.
Any good contacts for tyres in the North West? Could do with two rears
Something similar happened to me. I purchased a David Brown 880 from a local supplier. It has a registration plate but no log book. When I queried this with Swansea they sent me a raft of forms and advice on getting the relevant club to sort it out.
My understanding is that the tractor had once been part of a beet harvester.
As it never goes on the public highway, I have not bothered:)

Re not knowing the number plate.
It just does not matter as long as you know the VIN.
Both of my tractors came with no numbers on. A 1958 FE35 and a 1955 TED20. In both cases I filled in a V62 and put a covering letter in with the application say bought with number plate missing. In both cases, I got a V5c with the original number plate, and in both cases I'm only the second recorded keeper.

As long as the vehicle has been on the computer at some point in time, it will still be there. The computer doesn't forget!!!!

If you fill in the V62 and enclose your £25, you can't lose, if DVLA have no record of the VIN, they return your £25. Win win

Thanks We tried looking the number up via the VIN but its not on the Database, just received the dating cert so going to apply to register it using this and see how we get on.

The V62 is worth a try. If the vehicle is dormant due to inactivity, it won't show up to dealers etc, only DVLA will be able to access it.

My two were last taxed in 1979 and 1980 respectively. They wouldn't have shown up, but they were still registered......
