Made a start today. Doing about 27cwt/ac so about normal.

Nearly ruined a rabbits day when I chased it out at the end and a buzzard landed on it. Unfortunately it got away.

Cut our first bit of cassia today, guesstimate about 4t/ac. Not quite as good as Tower at around 4.5t/ac.
Not so much straw either. Local cattle man baled 14 ac of Tower straw and got 114 round bales!

Managed to get combine out without it raining today
cutting volume ,looks like the drought has spoilt a good crop ,very spindly seed , big heap of straw though which ties in with when rainfall stopped

Done some osr. To many bloody buzzards where we have been the small birds don't stand a chance now the do gooders have protected all the predators! The sparrowhawks are scared off by the buzzards. Won't be long until the sparrow is a rare breed and we get the blame.

I would have finished winter barley today if it wasn't for the inch of rain falling out of the sky since 8am. OSR is fit to move into straight afterwards.

Did some OSR in the evening, 4 different verities of Pioneer was pleasantly surprised on brash, combine weigher tallies with trailers out the field although no weigh bridge to confirm but average so far (field not finished) was 5.4t/ha at 10.5% moisture. in areas it was running well over 6.5t/ha. It's the best I've seen on brash, stalks still a tad green mind. One variety that was better than the rest was PT234, really meant for Northern growers but looked very good here all year, quick out the blocks, good into winter, didn't flea beetle spray it and planted at 2.4kg/ha, didn't chuck much at it either (due to price being so low)

Winter Barley all cut here. Yields ranged from 6.5t/ha to 12.5t/ha (plenty of muck).

Sadly average is about 7.5t/ha , not great compared to all these mega yields

Got one field left, wasn't really fit enough yesterday. Looks like it will be another week till we get it now. Some Skyfall won't be long after, probably towards the end of the 1st wk of August. Had two load of barley go this morning before the rain set in. Paperwork afternoon now!

I think the osr is going to do better than people think and don't go by looks we are in a field which we thought was to thin at the top but yield monitor doesnt vary from thick to thin bits. And we are pleasantly surprised with what we are finding

Plants in thin areas will create more branches, therefore more pods and seed. Obviously it isn't practical to have really low plant populations in the winter, but I have seen areas with about 5 plants/m2 look similar to 'normal' areas by the time flowering occurs, and at harvest, yield wasn't too different. The main clear difference was the thickness of stems and number of branches
