Cover crop into standing wheat

Thinking of sowing a small area as a trail into standing wheat for the shoot. Mustard will make up a big % of the mix but what else could be added to get a bit of diversity and provide a bit of cover and when would you aim at spreading it on ?
Plan to cot the straw long but don’t want to cause any problems for the combine.

Going to spread it on, about 2 acres by hand

I’ve often wondered about this into spring wheat because it’s late by the time it’s cut but would a fert spreader stand any chance of throwing small seeds 28m

No unless it's a boom type fert spreader which imho is the ideal.

What percentage mustard do you sow I put 4 kg of mustard in and 26 of buckwheat in for summer cover but the buckwheat still got swamped out

My concern would be if we get a wet 3 weeks say and you end up combining the wheat say mid sept, will the cover crop be a pain
