Cow with staggers

Had a suckler cow go down with staggers was flat out in field in a distressed way , but had the vet to her , she is up now and has walked into the shed , just wondering what else we can do to help her , the vet gave her mag into the vain and I have given a dose tonight, but she is still very unsteady on her feet and breathing a bit quick , she has drank and eaten corn . Worst thing is she’s my daughters cow .

You could buy a few bags of high magnesium rolls for her, maybe some molasses. I’d start giving the rest of the cows that were with her some high mag rolls also. Better safe than sorry

I always thought mag in the vain killed them always done it under the skin
It can if delivered too quick.

second the mag bolouses to make sure she’s right, but also get some mag into the rest. Can be a very fine line between ok and dead 😔

we just used to mix cal mag (calcined magnesite) in with a small amount of meal and fed every day. Cheap and you new they all got some. Only had problems when we didn’t do it. Worked well for ewes in the spring as well

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
