Cross sucking

just seen one sucking another one, she’s got two plastic plates in one facing each way. Is there any other solution other than lead? Even then which one goes the sucker or the suckee? The sucker actually has some milk on her. Do those weaning flaps work instead?

We've just sold one that was sucking, she was the one giving the least milk. The one being sucked is still bawling for her mate, five days after weaning.

Highest yielding cow for a while here was a Monty, but she was probably drinking more milk than she was giving. Currently dry and will be going if she starts her nonsense again.

My father made a custom ones out of two m10 domeheaded bolts with the square under it. Bow them both a half circle and weld them at the thread end so they form a circle with the domes a few cm apart. Weld the last few cm of a few nails on the point where you welded them together facing to the heads. To ad extra effect you can angle the nailheads slightly to the outside.
Works a threat.

Have used the weaning nose pads with some good success. Some cows can manage them wiggled out but they aren’t hard to put back in again

It’s a big problem for me. We have plates in maybe 5% of the heifers. I thought it was feed related, but my vet is convinced it’s because of the plastic tits we put up for calves. She say it’s a problem everywhere where they do a good job of having these available to the calves. The problem of not having them, is that the visits from the white vans are unannounced and with decreasing intervals. I had the “animal welfare” visits 2 times in the last 15 month. And the consequense of not having everything in order, is fines and more visits in the future because you go in the black book.
