Crowdfunding for Scams

A 14 year old lad has lost his £8400 life savings buying a John Deere unseen on Ebay only to find there is no tractor. They blamed Covid restrictions for not seeing it but how urgent was the purchase?
On a positive note he has been compensated £7000 so far by a crowdfunding campaign.
Begs a few questions as to (yet again) buying machinery unseen, how he got such a sum at his age, how his parents sanctioned the purchase and a demonstration that in spite of everything we are a caring society.
The cynical will also look at reporting a purchase scam could be a good introduction to a crowdfunding scam too.

Why is Covid a block on viewing a tractor? You can still travel for work & business. Or ask someone else more local to the machine to check it out-as many on TFF do.

Most scams rely on greed or gulliblity

Personally I fail to see why people buy farm machinery from often hundreds of miles away, none of it is unique, wait a while and the same, or kit able to do the same job will be available locally-without the haulage bill!

I regularly buy stuff from all over the country, don't pay for it until it is on the collecting truck or trailer though
