Dairy Inspection

Just had a Defra dairy inspector visit. Not long after an Arla Garden one (all corrections done) and he has found a list of things wrong including rusty stainless steel pipes that need covering! He also told us we MUST pre-spray cows with disinfectant. We clean dirty cows and dry wipe clean ones but he says that is not good enough. I have looked up the regulations "2. Before the milking is started the teats, udder, flank, hindquarters and adjacent parts of the abdomen of the animal shall be clean."

He also said we could use inline milk filters instead of pre stripping yet the regulation says “At the start of the milking of an individual animal, the milker shall inspect the appearance of the milk”

never had the bottom one mentioned!

I'm being honest but basically paraphrasing he said what it a thief was here and he got on the roof........ Lost for words.

Another time someone said what if a contractor was here to work on the roof. How would he know the roof was fragile. I said if I pointed out to him the roof was fragile i'd be lucky not to get a punch in the nose.

Different grades of stainless steel. Think it’s 303 has a higher ferrous content than 316 ( think that’s the numbers they use )
The lower grade is 304, but the most common reason for stainless looking rusty is using angle grinders or other tools that have been used on mild steel. That leaves minute traces behind, which then rust. The best way of removing it is hydrofluoric acid paste, but be extremely careful with ppe as it is nasty stuff and will dissolve skin, eyes etc very quickly https://www.waspsupplies.com/stainless-steel-pickling-paste-gel-739-p.asp

Petition: Temporary Ban on agricultural use of sewage cake

In order to protect our land, we’re seeking a temporary ban of the agricultural use of sewage cake until better testing and treatment of waste can be proven. We call on all farmers after this harvest to refuse to accept any more until things change.

Some research suggests that the contamination of land is far more serious than just heavy metal build ups. There is an increasing amount of micro plastics and forever chemicals appearing in sewage cake. We think testing for these when it leaves the processing plants isn’t adequate, and that processing needs to adapt to be able to remove these contaminants.
