Would it be illegal to disconnect daylight running lights on a pickup?
I only ask as day light running lights on a dark coloured pickup let trespassers, poachers, hare coursers and thieves know you are about ,there by allowing them all to scarper before one has a chance to creep up on them to ask what they are doing or to get reg number of vehicle.

Would it pass MOT if standard lighting equipment wasn’t working ?
Probably best to ask relevant government dept or their website with current requirements.
Or ask an experienced MOT man who has up to date knowledge of all the regulations ?

You could probably put a switch in to turn off when required ?

What you really need is an EV, then they wouldn’t hear you either 👍

Get a long range rifle with a good scope, then you don't have to creep up on them (y) :sneaky:

Generally it is illegal to disable a safety device on machinery used for work - would this apply to road use?
I would go for the switching option mentioned above as you have a valid reason - would be better if it had an ‘on’ default when you restarted (to make sure it wasn’t left off accidentally)

MOT failure if perm disabled, have them on my Isuzu, mine do go off when handbrake is engaged but agree with you, they are a right pain in the backside when having a drive around late at night with the rifle

Internet search engines have the answer  if you cant work it out for yourself.

If they were so interested in making visability safety stuff why ( relevant to this part of the World ) even offer grey coloured cars?

Joined up thinking ( other wise known as simple thought processes or common sense) is what is lacking in a lot of people.

Not just relevant to your part of the world

we have same issues with dark cars, especially grey / black, being virtually invisible on the open road on a black bitumen surface . . .

just one of the reasons I always buy white

Ex FIL said same about when they stopped putting chrome on cars. At least the sun would reflect off the car somewhere and dazzle you!
He had an old Ford Falcon (Granada in UK )

On my 61 plate Golf there is a complicated process by which you can disable the daylight running lights, by going into the digital display settings menus. Trouble is you have to do it every time you turn the ignition on so you tend to leave them on. So I don't think its illegal to disable them otherwise the process wouldn't be there.

That probably sounds right and is a complicated procedure to deter people from doing it.I have a switch in my hilux to disable the start stop nonsense which I turn of every time I start it.

You could switch the sidelights on, which are way less bright than the DRL's, but still probably too much light, plus it switches the rear red lights on.
I really wouldn't risk driving around country roads in near darkness with no lights, just in case.
