Discordon information/advice

I’m looking for a bit of advice from anyone who has run/owned a discordon. Our farm is pretty consistent heavy hansslope series clay and after much deliberation the past few years over stubble cultivators we keep coming back to the Discordon. We currently run a KV stubble finisher that does a good job with a bit of moisture in the soil, but as soon as things bake out as it is now and in 2018 for example it’s a nightmare, it falls to bits and just does a very rough job. We have also hired in jokers/carriers the past few years which have worked well, and we are looking to purchase one at some point, but when we want to do a deeper cultivation or conditions are very dry they don’t cut it on the heavy land. We ran a discordon in the early 2000s and it performed well, I wasn’t involved with the farm then but the old man swore by it, it just fell out of favour to the mounted type sumo machines being more usable on small tractors. We think for what they cost now it would be a useful tool to have in the armoury, especially in these drier tougher conditions when we just want a heavy big disc to bite in and cultivate, mix properly leave relatively level (we will be following with a culti press And a vad). We could run one along side a joker/carrier, but to run something like a Quattro and a joker would cost us a fortune. Considered a Topdown/terrano mt but they are very costly machines and I’m not sure how they would cut it on heavy, baked out land. Trio style machine don’t mix enough for us and I’m not sure we need an full on subsoiling leg found on solo style machines. We have found a tidy 2009 4.2m to pull with a challenger 765, we have some proper banks so would rather stay narrower but be boss of it! Any thoughts/experience Would be great. Many thanks

Would anyone know the difference between a HD version and a normal one. Brocks seem to think the newer models such as the one we are looking at with tines attached to the main frame that don’t completely fold (just the outers 2 do) are what they are and that there isn’t a HD version, anyone have any ideas?

@Wheels88 I a probably as old as your dad and run a small one 3.5 behind a Cat55 I think its the bees knees but we haven,t really mastered getting the ground level behind it, but we keep trying it just dose a good job. It is just one great big piece of metal.

This might answer anything to do with changes in spec and what to look for

We gave up on one as it wouldn’t leave the ground level and as we don’t run a separate press pass in front of the drill, it just left things to rough. We even had the then GB rep out but he couldn’t do anything with it, so brought us a brand new one to try thinking ours was bent, but the new one did the same.

Many thanks for that Durt Burd, unfortunately I don’t subscribe to Profi so can’t read it and the one off payment of £15 seems a bit steep!

Thanks for your input guys, the levelness of the finish is a concern, even though we will plan to run a cultipress before the drill sometimes due to weather/time this may not be an option so it would be nice to have it relatively level! The more I think about it might be worth carrying as on as we are for now, accept we may have to carry out an extra pass when a press or power Harrow and keep trying to top up the piggy bank for a 3.5 metre Quatro when funds allow as I think that would be the tool for us! The only problem of course being the price of a new one and the availability of a decent late used one! Just out of interest what machines are you running and what did you replace the discordon with @D14

I bought a 3.2 meter machine to ship to Kenya. I used it last autumn behind a Ford 7810 with a turbo to black over stubble on our black fen. The times were just scratching under the disc level . It was brilliant leaving a beautiful finish that I should have drilled into. Because of covid we didn’t ship it and my son used it on a Claas 640 with the tines in deep this spring and it was brilliant. The only thing about them is they are so long you need a field to turn it in. He is dismantling it now and hopefully we get to use it here sometime soon.

A 4m Quattro which we picked up cheap second hand before everybody realised how good they were and the prices shot up. Since sold it but we made £7,000 on it and used it for 6 years as well.

Vaderstad topdown's are certainly not cheap but you are getting a lot more machine for your money they are far better built and more flexible than all the other machines out there , there definatly worth looking at beyond the initial purchase price.
