Do growth regs increases straw?

Chatting with my agronomist about increasing the straw my crops yield as I’ve been short for the cattle the last few years. All taller varieties and grazed by sheep in the winter, also want more bulk so the JD rotary doesn’t smash it up as much. I’m looking to reduce growth regs and he said growth regs can increase straw yield as they can help tillering, might be a balance between straw yield and minimising lodging?

I know nothing but surely its already tillered when you apply growth reg

Products like chlormequat and Moddus suppress apical dominance so more resources go into side tillers. These aren't new tillers, just late ones due to die when stem extension starts. However they can still die later as they put extra demand for resources to keep them going: unless there is a adequate water and a good supply of all nutrients, they can still be aborted.

Yes but cereal plants naturally exhibit apical dominance- one tiller will become the main one and the rest are just along for the ride. PGRs negate this effect and encourage them all to become the real deal and it gives you more even crops. They can also become thicker, less wafty and may even gain you more straw from having a slightly shorter, albeit thicker, crop.

My agronomist has been wittering on to me to use growth reg on barley for a few years to increase straw yield , so last year in a 22 acre field, half got growth reg and half didn't. End result was, I won't be buying growth reg again 1.4 bales/acre less on the growth reg half. Little bits went flat in both halves of the field.

I wouldn't grow barley without any PGR but it is possible to be a bit ham-fisted with it and overdo it, particularly in a dry year. Which product was used? Not all of them really whallop the crop but some definitely do.

I can't remember what product it was without looking back!! only thing I do know is if I was recommended 1l/ha i'd only put .75l/ha on, if 2 l/ha i'd put 1.5 on.
