Drilling now

2016 we were all sown up by Easter then it p!ssed it down for 2 weeks and i had to redrill most of it. So you roll the dice and have a go.

At least with a claydon (and home saved seed) all you have lost is the diesel to drill it? Bit different to the poor sod who bought and drilled 100ha of posh hybrid Clearfield OSR and had it destroyed by flea beetle in a month.

Some ponies are riskier to back than others.

My seed is now here! I know what I’m going to drill ratewise but in technical speak how many seeds/m are people going with now? 400? Good conditions.

That is just beans being beans. Another year April drilled would have been useless.
Agreed
Need to consider crops on along term average yield

The 2012 crop was sold at £300 a tonne
Now all the environmentle beans have gone bean price is moving back up relative to other crops
Spring Beans are the lowest cost crop with low inputs and low fixed costs (wear and tear )

370 seeds/m2 farm average for spring barley for mid March strip tilling into good seedbeds. All variable rate based on soil type & assumed establishment %.

They are unreliable and so need to be cheap. Direct drill and pre em and a go with SAN703.

Lots of images of drills going on social media. Fog this morning stopped liquid fertiliser on wheat. At 2pm the crop is still wet, so although it is warm, it is not drying at all. Ripping game strips next week so I'll see how they come up but I don't see it being fit to drill for another week yet. What we need here is sun and wind to strip the moisture out of the topsoil.

Brash would go here, seed turning up on Monday, heavier stuff will be a week or two yet, may pull some tines through it to break up the surface a bit and help dry it out but dont want to pull up lumps.

Excuse my lack of liquid fert knowledge but have you stopped whilst it was foggy and the crop damp this AM to avoid the liquid fert drying on as the crops dries as the day goes on?

Had a look at my spring oat land today, tried to tickle the top with the Xpress but really needs a day or so then broke a D ring on the press :(
Not farming next week but will hopefully have all the drilling done. Still not sure on N yet Agronomist is saying get it on and I suppose ground conditions are perfect. Trouble is everything looks really well and would only use early N to encourage tillering which I really don't need. He's also saying 100kg N / ha on the OSR which I am loathe to do normally I would would go something like 70:70:60 or similar.

You don’t have to do what your agronomist says. You know your farm.
