Fallen stock burial.

Foot and Mouth 2001... to reduce the risk of spreading disease 🤦🏻‍♂️
Surely not, lorries running farm to farm versus on farm burial, one sounds like a far greater risk of spreading f&m than the other.
I have a feeling it had come in or was being introduced about the time of ff&m, can’t remember the exact timing or reasoning but we lost a cow around about the time it was introduced or soon after and we rang animal health or whoever and they told us to bury her. As I say I’m not absolutely sure when or why but I think it was about the outbreak of f&m, it would certainly make sense to my mind.

On farm burial was banned as part of the agricultural review straight after F&M2001.

The argument was carrion would (could) spread diseases like F&M from farm to farm via eating from open dead holes.
Totally ignoring the fact lorries haul dead/diseased animals into every farm until the lorry is full 🤦🏻‍♂️

Is leather not in demand today? Last time I looked anything made of leather wasn’t particularly cheap
Dont think theres a demand as much as used to be ,,100yrs ago or less ,there was abattoirs supplying the tanneries all over the country for everything you think of ,,nowadays with the vegan crowd, the anti cruelty league , much less leather in clothing and vehicles and alot of high quality stuff comes from abroad .
Used to be a tannery near lincoln , back of the cad yard but that closed donkeys years ago .

From memory the reason for the banning of on farm burial was an edict from Brussels, Europe weren’t allowed to bury on farm so we had to comply. It was an almighty struggle to get a derogation for parts of the west coast.
