Currently on holiday in Cornwall, my 9 year old son is out of school for 7 days, school is fine about it as this is the only time that l can manage off. The missus pointed out that if it wasn't ok the school would be denying him a family holiday........ He does have near perfect attendance though, and we do educational things on holiday as well as the beach etc.

What’s the attendance like the rest of the time? My 2 are off school for a week soon as we’re having our first family holiday, the teachers were thrilled for us and our children to be able to go away and said that it’ll help the children broaden their minds on the wider world and experience a lot of new things.
They did say “send a letter to the headteacher to ask for permission” but instead we wrote a letter saying that they will be off etc, haven’t heard anything back but teachers keep saying their excited for our children..

The whole truency laws is more aimed at the sort of parents who don’t send their children to school much and lay about watching Jeremy Kyle - they can rarely afford a holiday let alone abroad which is where teachers don’t mind children being off for.

Ask the class teacher or if you/wife know any teachers ask them - all schools will have different policies.

Probably not, its not just farmers that have busy lives. How's their attendance the rest of the time? Can they stand to miss a week? Can you not go away in winter?

Having said all that my sons missing 3 weeks soon (only year 2 though) to travel to the UK. School were no trouble saying he'll learn more travelling. If we were going to lie on a beach for 3 weeks I wouldn't do it though.

We have just spent the whitsun half term on holiday - because that's when the 'idiot' teachers have to take their holiday - and I can tell you that we didn't pay 'top rates'.
Co-incidentally, it was spent in the holiday cottage of a tff'er, so keeping our money in the loop (y)
It wasn’t meant mean but more sarcastic.. I always forget about the half term that’s just been....

Always in school unless they are poorly

At the discretion of the head teacher if they grant you authorisation for absence. We've taken our child out of school for a week the last 2 years and the head teacher was fine with it. Just wrote a letter explaining reasons we wanted to book in term time and she authorised it. This year though, new head teacher wouldn't authorise it but we've still gone away in term time anyway. I believe you are allowed 5 days unauthorised absence per school year before the authorities might step in to fine you.
