Farm in the flood.

Hi. I'm researching family trees, and some rellies lived at Abbey Farm, North End House Farm and Short Wood Farm at Bullington

Long shot. But anyone on here from these farms ?

I lived near the Ouse in the 70s and a retired neighbour from the river authority told me that he was the last man to dredge the stretch from Denver to Ely. He was in charge of a dutch barge with I believe had an elevator to discharge the spoil onto the bank. The main water way is clay lined and he reckoned that they had no one skilled enough to the job back then. That would be over 60 years of silt.
They will always blame climate change as an easy excuse, both the Ouse and the Witham have broken there banks in the past, my land lords father had to sand bag the bank near his farm, they were just starting the second layer of bags when the bank burst on the other side. I am sure the EA are being complacent. They have big pumps on the Witham which helps them discharge into the tidal channel so they don't think the need to maintaining the river. We still have more than 2mts of water being held back by earth banks which are leaking like a sieve.

The stupid thing is, it may partly be climate change and nothing we do in this country will have any major effect!
while we are only 1% of the problem, until we persuade countries like India and China to change their ways the rain will keep coming if it is driven by climate change. So it is important that we take far more action to alleviate this flooding problem.
as an aside China built more cars last year than the rest of the world put together!

think that’s a fair point sitting around discussing climate change and making grand plans is n’t helping anyone today. The flooded area around Lincoln is in an area of man made and altered drainage so if you don’t do something to sort it out now these problems will continue. We all now about climate change but turning it around is long term but we are actually clever enough to make sure this doesn’t happen again or at least not to the same extent

Blaming climate is always the easy answer when those on the ground know full well its poor maintenance of the drainage system that has been developed over decades to stop these events from happening. Its not knew as those in Lincolnshire in 1953 can testify with the great flood. Yes it was climate related with an exceptional high tide made higher by a weather system but it was the badly maintained sea defences that failed. Those on the ground had been complaining like now in respect of lack of maintenence and predicting the consequences. The Dutch where in the same position but had actually started work to rectify the position but unfortunately it was to little to late.

I was trying to make the point, that if climate change is a major factor , then we should be taking more action to combat these floods not tinkering at the edges.
If Vermuydens actions worked for 300 years, it cannot be that difficult to dig a bigger better channel or build a higher dyke, surely!

Dont think there is any need for bigger better or higher dykes just maintenance of the existing systems would help. Reports of only one pump out of four working does not inspire confidence and a barrage on all our major rivers similar to the thames barrage but with generating capacity would not only secure security of drainage but would also give electric power security.

Yeah, but what do we know - we're only farmers

The problem is, it's all them d!ckheads that are running round right now, trying to get elected. They're the ones that make all the decisions :banghead::banghead::banghead:

You would think they would realise if they do start kerbing climate change,it won’t be a quick change they’ve got to do something about existing ditches and rivers quickly
and if they want to carry on building houses/ind est and roads at the rate they are they will have to start looking at barriers/pumps and raising banks
don’t see how it’s a option to do nothing

We sit the other side of the river from Short Ferry where the flooding is and our problem is seepage through both the Cardyke and Branston Delph water comes from the highlands of Lincolnshire and needs to get to the River through these man made waterways. Cutting greenhouses gases does not help us. Cleaning and maintaining these waterways will. I think the major problem with everyone these days is they are addressing the big (future) picture and are not doing anything to sort out the effects until they hit us. If we are going to get more extreme weather what are we going to do to mitigate it. I have an answer and it's not electric cars.
