Farm in the flood.

I heard talk that a meeting has been held and a Lincolnshire river authority has been muted. I think this is a excellent idea but only if practical people are put on the board and the Environment Agency powers curtailed. What chance of that? Not only that you can only do something if the finance is available, so our asteemed politicians had better cough up!!

I would like to know how much the ea is getting now from farmers and householders in Lincolnshire and how it is spent?A Lincolnshire rivers authorities would be a good start to look after the rivers,it’s happened in somerset and has been a great success in solving the problem down there

Not sure but when Somerset Levels flooded, I remember reading somewhere that EU doesn't allow dredging etc.
This is absolutely untrue, you can google the relevant directive. This deals with the importance of flood protection. The issue as far as the EU was concerned, was to make different countries co ordinate their flood protection measures on rivers such as the Rhine. It has no real relevance to the mainland UK

It's not that they can't but they don't want to.
The clew is in the name. The environmental agency. They are more interested in the habitat for birds, fish, voles and eels than stopping flooding. There are several arias they channel water when required. " what a lovely place for a nature reserve" so they keep the levels high all year round giving less capacity when required.

How’s it help wildlife if the ground is under 3 feet of water and fish left scattered in the fields when the water recedes

My neighbour has planted a vineyard. Yes indeed we could be parched by next summer. More than likely. But are we building in water storage which would alleviate downstream flooding? Of course not. That would be engineering as solution. And that has gone out of fashion.
Who is your neighbour?

I have heard that Mr dyson has a couple of big diggers clearing waterways, some being EA responsibility.. perhaps someone more local can confirm?

Dredging any waterway increases capacity and flow rate whatever the situation, so flooding does not have to be inevitable.

Can’t confirm, but totally believable. He’s spent a lot on drainage infrastructure on his own land, only to be let down when the drained water hits the EA rivers.

I see Henry has regained a bit of land now with the pumps at full chat.
