Due to the good weather at lambing I’ve ended up with a few ton spare. I was wondering if it could be fed to weaned bucket calves that are coming home. They go on a calf rearer nut but I was thinking to include some ewe nuts to help use them up??? Cheers

Perfect folks, music to my ears. Not keen on feeding ewes the nuts once they’re milking out on grass, just seems to give bother with feet and bags. Left most males entire so not wanting to risk causing problems with their waterworks.

In a similar vein I have a lot of Sheep 18 rolls but am running short on suckler cow rolls, would it be ok to feed the sheep rolls to the cows, they are on 0.5kg each per day.

My father wouldn’t buy anything else except dairy cow cake. Everything got it sheep suckler cows store cattle the lot. He reckoned that bad dairy cake would show up in a day bad sheep or beef cake would show up when it was too late. Wasn’t a dairy cow on the place since the 70’s

The copper is the main issue but we are very short of copper so cattle cake cattle minerals pot ale is all ok for sheep here even Texels but don’t follow that rule if you arent severely deficient like here

Fine to feed sheep feed to cows, but it's not recommended to do the other way round. Sheep feed has no added copper, as copper is toxic to most breeds of sheep (some breeds more susceptible than others) and as such is not included. However if you are in a copper deficient area and/or aren't feeding high quantities you can get away with feeding cattle feed to sheep, although no feed rep would recommend it incase your sheep keeled over from copper poisoning!
Feeding sheep feed to cattle is also OK, any feed sold as GP/general purpose will have sheep minerals in. However as cattle have a higher requirement for copper, feeding sheep feed for a prolonged period may increase the risk of copper deficiency if no other mineral supplementation is given.

Only ever feed sheep feed to cows and y'stock . Keeps buying simple . Only diff is Cu , if short on farm ..... Had mostly Lamb finisher this winter , then ewe nuts !!

I’m currently feeding ewe rolls to our longest calved spring calvers as lambing was faster than normal and had half a tin left over. As above I don’t feed the ewes once lambed to prevent mis mothering. That & they normally go onto good grass with their lambs.
