Fertiliser decisions

That doesn't take long at this time of year. I doubt you would see the difference in the plants in a side by side trial with AN.

Excellent stuff.

I just Googled for it actually but couldn't turn much up. Nearly posted underneath to ask if anyone with more knowledge than me could comment. :)

I’m a farmer not a meteorologist! When do YOU think it will rain? All my N on apart from the last 100 kg N dose on the winter wheat. All pre ems on too. A bit of rain would wake them up, hopefully.

Hopefully this time tomorrow I shall be able to say the same thing.....albeit I doubt I'll manage to get the AnS on in time but that will follow before long.

DONE! :D

I have confirmed my order of the rainfall.

AN only needs a dew to go into solution. Apply urea this weather probably loose 25-50% of the N
Spoke by someone with a vested interest!!!!!
The research I've seen was from memory 10-20% loss when applied to bare dry ground and 30c for 30 days.

I'm not convinced losses are that great at the moment with 15c odd daytime temps and very close to a frost if not a frost at night.

Too late. All urea is now on ??

All fert now on. Just a small last split left for the ww.

You're keen!! And super organised too.

Are you not worried about it going in to the straw and not the grain?

I was thinking about this comment often made by people - it struck me that too much fertiliser in the vegetation is certainly better than too little in many respects. We keep being told 30% of yield comes from leaf 1/2. Unless we encourage the plant to produce a large plant with sufficiently large leaves, then the amount of sunlight captured could be limited, thus limiting yield.

Haha, I certainly wouldn't class myself as organised!
Doesn't look like there is alot of rain about after this weekend, and as I said at the start of the thread, we are urea based.
Historically I think I am usually a little late with fert applications, though I do try to follow the recommended timings.

I dont think it matters much with the spring barley when N go on tbh. But personally I would like to see tramlines before the main dose.
The ww had probably used the 40kg I gave it in mid march and I usually split the remainder. But quite honestly I thought "fu#k it" and put on a nice heavy amount.

Not sure there is a right and wrong thing to do anymore
