I particularly liked a bit in @Charlie Flindt s book and i think it related to fert applications i might be wrong but it went along the lines of I use the WICWIC system. What I can When I can.............. Nearer to the reality here. Sorry for the plot spoiler.

Had anyone cutback total fert yet as crops going backward in the dry time? I’ve still the final 3rd to put in and am pondering

No. I'm continuing as planned. Only the final dose on the wheat to do & we've had 15mm rain down here last week. The crops look good & there's unsettled weather forecast next week so will apply it after we've finished T1 on the wheat. Establishment on knobbly bits of clay cap for spring crops isn't great but all the N went on pre emergence so there's no choice there.

Where is this unsettled weather people keep mentioning? everything is less than 20% chance of any rain in the next 3 weeks that i can see

Just this morning I decided not to front load the diesel program for the JCB............
 sorry but that made me actually laugh out loud.
S barley here has had it's full dose of fert in 2 splits, pre-em and just as I could see the tramlines.
W Wheat has had 2/3 applications so far 125kg/ha N out of 190kg/ha N total due. It will get its final dose (liquid 24N 7S) probably in about 10 days time hopefully with some sort of rain about to wash it in.

All totals as planned here. Wheat circa 220kgN/ha with the last 2 cwt put on Easter weekend.
Winter barley 135 units/acre and all on by 1st april.

Some of my peers thought I was mad to start putting N on 6th feb and my last dose was far to early for there liking but yet again weve had a dry april and I'm glad I've gone it. Even thought the dry is now starting to bite crops are in a better state than they would have been with a more conventional approach to N timings.
Plan on finishing off ww this week. Drought common here so tend not to use massive N doses and front load the program...

Perhaps I thing to consider is the lack of residual N/S in the soil after winter ?
So in effect 200kg/ha might “appear” like 150kg in a normal year ??
obviously dependent on soil type, mineralisation , organic matter etc

It was the "front load the program" bit that did it for me.
In fact I might start to use it in day to day life.

But the real question - should l front load the diesel program on the tractor and front loader?

You never seem to see anybody putting on fertiliser nowadays hereabouts. I have been over ours 5 times, MOP, TSP, Kieserite and 2 x ammonium nitrate. It might not get used this season seeing how dry it is but the tramlines are firm and it was taking up room in the shed. I have cut back N rates to about 75% of normal due to lost potential due to other constraints so will make stocks stretch to finish this springs area. Won’t need to buy any till next year. No idea where the price will be by then.
