Today I read weight limit to be dropped to 400kg,barley down to £119 ton.How many will be caught out by this drop in weight for finished cattle.

The biggest issue is getting them away. If you have 20 in spec and they will only take 10 then you'll be giving beef away on 10 next time and so it rolls on...

Once the cattle job is gone...then it’s gone...that’s their problem

I don’t think many will shed a tear when it’s gone. Even something as silly as this ethanol in petrol job is going to make costs rise.

No one wants livestock now, or at least they’re not showing it.

Here’s a challenge: can anyone find one piece of information from our government or ngo’s that is positive on livestock?

There's a lot of feed waste from ethanol though.

You could look at any industry like that.

Sure, you’re right, but I think calling it ‘feed waste’ makes it seem like a product that will be taken by livestock farmers for the greater good or whatever. It won’t be. It will be an added value product that we will pay through the nose for, and that’s great for them and we should learn from it.

Waste product..... no way.

Depends how much there is though? Supply and demand unless it all just goes to AD.

problem with cutting the carcase weight is that a lot of big cattle will not be properly finished and more poor quality meat to deter folk eating beef even more
Our customer has demanded something different so we must provide it to survive. When I buy stores I will demand a smaller animal and it is up to the breeders to provide it or they won't have a customer. It is quite possible to finish cattle earlier if they are fed right.

I think the problem lies in vanity to an extent. A lot of farmers want to keep big continental cattle with big arses and the EUROP grid partially encourages that. Eating quality rarely comes in to it. Reducing carcase limits will also encourage more native breeding being used?
