What are peoples opinions on fitzroy? Not on the RL but looks promising from Agrii's trials. We're aiming to get drilling a lot earlier this year after how disastrous anything later drilled has been here in recent years. Have been growing graham / extase up to now. Any other varieties that are maybe worth considering. For feed, quality isnt important (We mill our own) only yield really. Both straw yield and grain yield are important as the straw is small baled and has a high value!

Also for barley considering kingsbairn, have had armadillo and been impressed before but meant to be higher yielding? Tried conventional 2 rows the last couple of years and cant compete with the hybrids. Shame you cant save the seed though.

For the last 5 or so years we have used the 2 row variety Cassia, and have been very happy with its performance, physically and financially, For the first time we have some Hybred Barley, Kingsbarn is the variety, this is in an away field and is in addition to our normal Cassia area.
It certainly looks good at the moment, but as always we shall see!

Be wary of the 6 row hybrids if straw is important to you. By the time it's fit the straw knocks up and can be a bugger to bale even in rounds.
Grain quality of the hybrids is good enough but I've never seen good straw from it.
