+1 for Muthing, although my opinion may be slightly biased as we are agents for Muthing, they are very well built, I used one a few years ago in NZ and it could take anything that was thrown at it, I even watched another operator use it pretty much like a rotovator across some ruts and it was fine. If you are in Yorkshire give me a shout, if not speak to Simon Richard Ltd as they are importers for them http://www.slopemower.co.uk/

I have used old taarup (crap), major (bit lightweight but good enough for the price), 2 different spearhead which are ok but I think possibly do a slightly worse job than my Major. My favourite was a Vogel and Noot, a superb machine that got quite a bit of abuse. They were badge engineered Italian ones which you can still get but I forget who the manufacturer is. Someone will say. Of ones I have not used Kuhn look good.
I think the V + N ones were rebadged Muratori.

Yes, its belt driven from the top shaft down to the flail rotor at the bottom, there are 3 belts from memory, ive had to tighten them only once when some other bolts came loose. The flails are available from Spalding's, not cheap though.

Still looking to be honest, it was put on the back burner a while back as these jobs tend to be. Got a pile of prices for various machines but now its a toss up between a Maschio Bisonte and Spearhead XRHD, liking the look of the Maschio and it seems a bit more robust also has the better name, but there's local support and service with the spearhead plus its a good bit cheaper. On paper they are very similar specs, but that doesn't mean much when the chips are down. Hopefully make a decision in the next fortnight and let you know.

Bought our first flail topper last week. 10 yr old Muthing 250
Done a few hours on it so far. Very pleased. Taken on new ground and it made light work of a bunch of 9” hollow blocks we found buried in the brambles!

Have a Bisonte (and a Girafona) here as well as Spearhead kit (not a flail), I would strongly advise you to check on some common parts prices, and availability/lead times especially on the Spearhead.
