Ford Ranger indicators

Our 2014 Ford Ranger has got indicator issues. Yesterday it started flashing really fast on a left turn so I assumed a bulb blown. All three are working when you look outside though. Also, while I was checking them the right hand side bulbs (which seems normal on dashboard) are making a very fast double pulse rather than a single normal one. Hazard flashers work as they should.

Anything I should try before phoning a garage? I have a basic multimeter and plenty capable of changing bits around if need be, just not much experience of diagnostics.

Didn't Ford do a recall on Ranger tail light wiring harnesses? Maybe it was later than 2014.

I'm assuming you've checked all the fuses, including the one for the trailer plug module. If you can be bothered, pull all the bulbs out and check the filaments - if they're looking a bit wrinkly, they could be stopping intermittently. 2014 is getting to that age where bulb holders start to go a bit funny too, check/clean them.

Indicators are operated by the BCM (which IIRC is built into the fuse box behind the little coin tray thing by your right knee), disconnect the battery for half an hour and reconnect it. You never know?

Failing that, you'll need to get a scanner on it.

If it was bulbs or holders would it not affect the hazard warning lights as well?

And if it was a fuse, wouldn't they just not work?

I will probably just get the garage to check it over.

I had problems on a 66 plate with moisture getting into the trailer socket at the back through a broken cover. Replaced it and all fine now

The cover actually broke off the trailer socket a couple of months ago and haven't got round to replacing it yet. Will get that done this week and see if it solves the problem.

I would definitely replace the trailer socket, Isuzu can have all sorts of strange electrical problems and it can be down to the mutil plug for the trailer socket

It's computer controlled, anything's possible.

Had a trailer load of sheep on this morning and all working perfectly. I was getting mixed up - socket cover is fine but were signs of dampness and corrosion on socket. Will give it a clean up later and see how long it lasts.

Thanks for everyone for advice, especially those that pointed towards the socket 👍

Supposedly, a resistor will sort this, and good lights will have one already. My cheap light boards don't! ;)
Graham edwards trailer with original lights . would expect them to be half decent.
Don`t mind though because at least i know they are working.
Ifor williams with ordinary lights gives no indication in cab that they are working, factory fitted electrics on pickup as well

Same here with my Ranger... I was told they will flash in the cab when NOT working.... Never really been very happy!

Original problem seems to be resolved for now. As above, I thought something was wrong with mine when I don't get a trailer indicator either flashing or beeping, good to know I'm not alone!
