Fuel filter blocked.

Been ok all year had 2 weeks ago fuel filter blocked on JD. Was due a service anyway so just thought it was ok it went to the hours. Fast forward 2 weeks and its blocked again.
Its black waxy soft lumps that I get out of filter. Could this be the biodiesel or have I got a bug in the tank? All fuel stations are clean newish plastic bunded tanks.
Is there something I can either put in tractor tank and or the fuel station to stop this issue?

You can buy an additive that kills any bugs in the tank, or can add each time to tractor. Think the last stuff I picked up from AB components while getting filters was called Wasp biokhem or along those lines..

My fuel supplier Evesons supplies a diesel bug killer that you put in the bulk tank.

When they made their most recent delivery they said is was not necessary as the fuel contained it anyway.

Lots of trouble round here last year. Buying group now advising filtering progressively to a micron on the tank if you want to avoid engine issues entirely. It is cheaper and easier to do this on the supply tank rather than on the machine.
I am thinking of using GTL for over winter to avoid issues. More expensive, but we are not using much post drilling to harvest.

We had major issues last summer with filters blocking. Haven't had single problem this year. So think the manufacturers got their finger out and sorted the problem. We did put a bug killer in when had our lockdown cheap as chips fill up, so might have helped.. or done nothing.. but £20 for 2000L won't be missed.

Used marine16 in our tank and seemed to work wonders on a similar looking issue. There is a but though. We went through a few 10micron filters on the tank shortly after so have some spare....... and I know 10micron probably isn't tight enough.

Just had this same issue on a couple ground care machines. Diesel bug. Bought additive, cleaned fuel system out and added an additive in. Problem solved.

If you have a storage tank put the diesel bug additive straight in. Real pain in the back side.

Don't forget to stir the tank up when you put whichever biocide you want to use in the tank. I stuffed the dispensing nozzle in the top and switched it on for five minutes........ don't fill any machines up for a while after though.

Reading about GTL you may find you get more hours use out of a tank full.

Have JD Fendt Kubota Manitou and a claas combine. The only one that has issues with the fuel is the JD. We were changing filters every 250 hours which does make the 750 hour service interval a joke. It has been better through the summer, perhaps that’s because we have been having a fill every 2 or 3 weeks

We were away for 8 wks last winter, when I filled up the tractor in mid march there was a lot of growth in the bunded plastic tank, so chucked in some treatment and left the pump running for 15 mins, and didnt fill thectractir up for a few days, have a 10 micron filter and water trap on the tank too. Not had any issues since but will chuck another treatment in before next fill which should see us over winter

Old stuff is around 5 microns, most new common rail stuff is about 2 microns. First Pre filters on machines are often around 20 to 30 microns.

So a 10micron bulk tank filter is ideal for most people, ideally with a water absorbing core.

If none of the suggestions above work, I've had some success with fitting a coarse (roughly Beta1000 @ 60 micron) wire mesh filter placed before your inline filter on the tank. We've found the extra FAME is leaving a thick, oily substance similar to what you've described.

Now its turning cooler I'm going back to it.

The vegetable oil in fuel coagulates with colder weather.

Yeah we know them as Boulder Stoppers! For something as thick as what we're seeing, you'll find it'd be just fine. Though we don't support cleaning filters, a wire mesh one won't suffer much from removing and giving a quick rinse in good diesel.

I put some of this in each fill up, I've not changed the tractor filter. On a couple of days it flashing filter blocked on the 6r JD I've now been running since with 3 tank fills with no issue. I cant believe it's that good?

Shock if John Deere manage to sell something out of the situation!
