I run a 4 leg erth aswell does a good job but ground conditions play the biggest part, too dry and you’ll lift big lumps of turf and leave it uneven and too wet is a waste of time as it just smears rather than breaking the pan View attachment 937569View attachment 937571View attachment 937572View attachment 937573View attachment 937574View attachment 937575
That is the problem with subsoiling grass land, its very hard to get the ground right , if it’s wet it’s a waste of time , and if it’s too dry it doesn’t work either. There are only a few weeks of the year that the ground is perfect to do. But when done right it’s a great job.

I specified a grassland subsoiler because that's were I was contemplating using one.
I have already used a normal arable type Opico/Heva machine, it created quite a mess, so I was thinking of a Grassland one, with the disc in front of the leg. The idea being that one gets the lift & cracking underground but the surface is not disturbed. Aiming to emulate @davedb .

Sorry for hijacking this thread but what's the difference between a grassland subsoiler and a "all the rave" low disturbance arable subsoiler?
Leg spacing is closer on a arable machine 500mm I think, grass are wider so they don’t lift sods up to much in older grass lays

Makes a big difference, where the black wheel marks are wasn't done, nearest the camera was.
We’ve used a Spaldings flatlift with leading discs and packer roller for several years, does a good job.
It only really lasts a winter. We have used it in less than ideal conditions and it still helps.
We had a mastek on demo which I believe is similar to a erth. In some fields it made a perfect job and very easy to pull, but in others it would lift slabs up which caused ‘steps’ which the packer roller couldn’t put back down and sometimes it would flip the slab upside down. But I’m sure others won’t have any issues with them.
Sumo type ones are popular around us now
