Harvest 2015 progress

So I have heard (but not seen) the first combines have been rolling in the UK? Heat killed barley in the east of the country. What are peoples thoughts and findings? Did the heat cause much yield loss, when are you going to start?

Winter barley harvest started last week. We had temps up to 38-39c and that quickly turned it ripe. Yields are very good, especially for hybrid varieties. Up to 13t/ha 13% moisture. The heat and drought will have knocked a tonne or more off the wheat, which is really turning quickly now.

Wheat & spring barley are turning now. Most of my osr is ready for desiccation & some is being done as I type.

I sprayed glyphosate on the headlands of my Volume hybrid barley this morning so my combine will be started up early next week. The ears are at about 100 degrees, so just another 80 to go before it will thresh i.e. ears pointing vertically downwards. Still quite a lot of green straw & green secondary tillers - when you think your winter barley is ripe, go away for a week's holiday & it might be ripe when you get back!

If knocking a tonne off from wheat also from 13t/ha to 12t/ha then I'm afraid my sympathy is limited!!

You're probably right, but Volume brackles pretty quickly as soon as it is 90% fit.

Do you run a trials organisation by any chance? I'm hosting some fungicide plots for Syngenta - You can work out who I am if that's the case & your user name matches your business name...

In the middle.
There was a combine cutting barley 10 miles up the road last tuesday but he stopped after about 5ac as it was to green even for crimping. At least 2 weeks for the barly yet and rape may get sprayed off at end of this week or start of next.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
