Has anyone else noticed or is it just me?

I too have noticed people being more friendly on the roads. Plenty walking past here every day and most will acknowledge you with a smile or a wave.
Having said that, when I am on a tractor or loadall I always try and wait for cyclists, walkers or runners whenever possible. It doesn’t cost me anything and they nearly all respond with a wave or some form of acknowledgement.

I am always conscious of our image as farmers, and I feel that if you can demonstrate courtesy when you obviously have the means and power to force them to back off or run for cover, then it demonstrates a certain strength of character to voluntarily give way out of consideration others.

I always drive very carefully on the roads as I realise that the entire reputation/image of the industry can be affected by my actions.

You not spread any hen muck i take it ?
I had to go into hiding for a few days , im allowed back in the shop now

Only needs to be an issue if you make it so. Inform villagers on facebook you will be hauling/spreading on these days. Sorry but its good nutrient and sustainable/green etc. Ignore the 0.2% of moaners and incorporate as fast as possible. Job done.

Actually yes. Was digging into a pile next to the bottom of a drive up to a couple of houses when one of the families appeared (out for their daily walk I imagine) and they all waved.
Kids didn't run for cover when I was spreading by their garden either.
We do try and cultivate it in asap as well though.

Had to move 240 ewe hoggs last Mon morning which involved talking them along about 1/2 mile of a cycle path . It was a nightmare . We did it at 7am thinking it would be quiet . I've never seen so many using the path but to be fair they were all fairly decent . It was also quite an eye opener to see how many were taking photographs ...... something we do and see everyday is to other people something interesting to watch .

While fencing I keep seeing plenty of people on footpaths, on the last job I was seeing the same 5 or so families every day walking the path along the fence, they commented on things like
Your making a great job, why are you doing it!
How long will you be here
Do you work every day?
Why do you work such long hours? (Only 9-10 hours a day)
We never notice how much farmers work before

If you tell them you're going to be spreading it then you get moaned at BEFORE you spread it as well as after.

I think it is sharing emotional experiences. Get three people stuck in a lift and they will emerge as friends, probably long term. Same thing during the war, "We are all in this together".
Robin Skinner (and John Cleese) in the book, families and how to survive them talk about this phenomenon, where everyone ascribes the "bad parts" to the enemy, so as you say, are all in this together

Try getting some spraying done when there’s footpaths round fields! It’s virtually impossible at the moment, was waiting in on field for probably 5 minutes for couple with two kids to walk past the end of the boom, the bloke got within 6’ the stopped got his phone out and started texting! I politely waved to ask if he’d just walk past so I could get going? I was met with a torrent of abusive language? then started spitting on the floor, all in front of his two young kids??‍♂️. He was obviously just looking for a reason to have a go at me and walk slow on purpose! I just smiled and waved politely, find it annoys people even more when you don’t retaliate??
I could tell from his accent they’d traveled probably 25 miles from the nearest city!

To be fair though the general population have been more polite, does get frustrating though when they’ve all decided to move to the countryside.

I got in that pickle on Wednesday with walkers and cyclists at one end of the cross field path. Stopping to take pictures of the sprayer or doubling back along the same path so you end up stopping again:banghead::banghead: Certainly tested my patience and sanity. ?

Had one when I was muck spreading the other day, just about to set off on the outside run an someone appeared from behind the hedge just as I’d put the beaters in! Rather than holding back and letting me go out the way he decided it would be a good idea to walk right next to me:banghead::banghead::banghead:, so I had to stop and wait for him to walk down the track. By that time someone was coming the other way! It was near impossible to do the outside couple or runs☹️

There has been a change in the cyclists here with a lot of just normal people out sometimes with young children for a ride not wearing Lycra but virtually all wear a helmet now. There are also plenty of teenagers on bikes which is a rare sight too. Roads are noticeably busier this last week with general traffic.
The non lycra clad ones are much more friendly I have found. Its normally them giving big waves.

Met a lycra clad one a few weeks ago with drill, folding combi drill. Pulled into a gateway on single track road and he refused to go past. Just stopped and looked. I admit I lack patience and at this point should have got out to see what the issue was. Anyway I just chose to pull out of gateway and continue through gap, engaging fan on drill and shot blasting him with spring barley.

Wasn't clever I know, but seemed a good idea at time.

The tip of a sprayer boom is like a human magnet! It seems to draw people towards it. Wonder if putting a sign on the end saying fudge off would help.
