Ivy can readily behave like a fence wire snare round a tree. When it is thick as your arm and interlinked all the way round it will stop the bark from expanding. If you don't want to let ivy kill the tree or kill the ivy you can free of a clear 50% of the circumference and allow the tree to expand and the ivy to continue growing.
The biggest problem I've found while managing deciduous woodlands is ivy creating a large sail area during gales that generally happen during leaf drop season.

Planting all these trees seems like too much hard work. If we were to plant Packham and a few others like him, we could save much more Carbon, by stopping them flying all over

The Wild Justice group says 50 million non-native birds - pheasants and partridges - are released each year. They say the law requires the Government to carry out an environmental assessment on the impact of these birds. Shooting organisations say its an extremist attack on their industry which ignores the benefits of shooting to conservation and the environment.
