Hearing aids

Thought I was heading for hearing aids.

I've been going deaf in one ear for a week or so, tried the Otex stuff, but has not made it any better.

Yesterday manged to get an appointment with a hearing specialist, Right ear not too bad he says, this is the one I can't hear with, sucks it out, mainly dead skin and a little bit of wax.

Now the Left ear, 'great lump of wax' he says and drags it out in one piece, a little flush with water and all clear again. Strange I could Hear with that one.

Back to the Right ear, appears the ear drum is bulging a little, so I've to try Sudafed for a week because the tubes are likely blocked up, which is borne out by the fact I've had a stuffy nose for a while now.

Amazing to see inside your own ear

Now his advise, don't use Otex it can do more harm than good, if you're going to see someone like him use warm Olive Oil twice in 24 hrs before your visit.

£40 for one ear, £70 for two.

I’ve struggled for years with hearing in noisy social situations. Specifically on one side.

Find it hard to follow conversations.

But in normal background sound situations all is fine.

I suspect I have hearing loss on the left due to too much shooting in my teens with no ear protection.

What are modern hearing aids like? I see some advertised for serious money and wonder if there an industry selling aids with serious mark ups.

Should add I don’t like things in my ears normally. I can stand ear buds for an hour or so but after I find them uncomfortable.
I've used really expensive hearing aids in the past but my experience is that the NHS ones are now excellent.
The older you get, background noise becomes more of a problem

Oh I have this problem at the moment 😱
Hearing not great anyhow but wax has built up to and I listened to something with earphones and pushed them in to hear and buggered the job up ! Tried the ear drops but have made it worse with no hearing on the left all day 😕
Anyway I found a ear woman in Newquay who reckons she can clean my ears out on Monday 👍

A neighbour in his mid 70's had been struggling with his hearing for a long time, it had been gradual and he denied it was an issue but often went absent during conversations etc as he couldn't keep up. Very similar experience to the above, he went to the NHS Audiologist, got fitted with 2 hearing aids and is a changed man. I was with him yesterday and he was commenting on how he'd been listening to a robin in a tree, I'm pretty sure he hadn't heard that for a very long time and it's definitely improved his quality of life. It's a bit of a shock when he starts talking to himself and it turns out he's answered a call with his phone on silent though

Had my phonak aids for just over a year now. They are expensive but very good and boots are excellent. Occasionally forget to put them in and really notice how bad my hearing was. Can have conversation with grandchildren and the Bluetooth is brilliant.

I had my phonak aids 3 months now, what a difference it has made, very clear, no wind noise, background noise cancelling, and Bluetooth is excellent.

Only 2 faults really,
1 is when your on the phone and the phone is in your pocket, everyone thinks your talking to yourself,
Other things is I now hear things I don't want to hear

Can you please share the name of your model? We are choosing hearing aids for mom now and the variety of different products is just overwhelming

I love my Starkey Evolv AIs - I work in live theatre and find them to be great for music as well as spoken word. I have Meniere's and the Fall Alert is a great peace of mind for myself and family as I live alone. The app is great with many features to help you make custom settings that I can use when listening to music or podcasts. The table mic is AWESOME in meetings as is the mini remote mic I can clip on someone for one-on-one conversation. Edge mode is great in restaurants and bars - such a difference! The translation feature will talk to you, but it will print out on the screen what you say in the other language so you can show whomever you are talking to to have a conversation. Twice only i had to use hearing aid repair , but those were some minor issues.

ask @chaffcutter about his. …….. if he can hear you i’m sure he will answer with some useful advice 🤣

in short i think he will say the expensive solutions are not always the best and there are a lot of expensive sharks out there so be careful and don’t assume paying more will get you better kit
