Helping Refugees Thread

I’m not sure where to post this thread so perhaps a mod would shift it…..without it losing exposure if possible.

There is an obvious refugee crisis unfolding due the the ongoing conflict and I thought that a thread detailing ways in which we could help if desired would be useful, feel free to add the details of any groups that you know to be sound, I know @kfpben is organising help also.

I know several people personally who are involved with the following and can assure anyone that you would struggle to find a better, more direct and efficient use of money to help with the unfolding situation:

As @Macsky says I am working with a charity based near me that has been active in the Chernobyl area for over 30 years. I won’t name them for now so we can ‘launch’ correctly

They say that currently the greatest need is inside Ukraine, specifically in the areas where the fighting has been most intense. The CEO of the charity is using his contacts to try and ensure safe passage of aid to where it is needed most. Currently many bridges and main roads have been destroyed, sat nav blocked and all road signs removed so navigation by people without local knowledge is almost impossible. It is also important the correct stuff gets through- baby food is a priority for example.

He says that at the moment at least most refugees arriving at the borders are largely being cared for by friends and relatives in other European countries. I was told there wasn’t a lot of point (currently- it’s a fluid situation) in arriving at the border and distributing aid, the Mayor of one Polish town has asked for people to stop bringing things as they have so much they have no where to store it.

He is also in contact with the Ukrainian embassy and U.K. government to ensure nothing is held up at customs en route.

For my part I have cleared out a grain store to receive donations, gathered volunteer HGV and LGV drivers together and am waiting for the green light from the Charity to start collections. I’ll publicise on here when the charity says we are good to go.

Sadly I think this will be a long term situation so it’s important to get supply lines right into Ukraine if at all possible rather than just take a load of aid to the border and give it to people who are already safe and being relatively well supported already.

Most of them want to return to ukraine as long as it is not under russian rule . Row going on about letting them here is just political point scoring
The group that I linked helps a church in Moldova, they are far from wealthy but are doing what they can for those that have started arriving across the border already, it’s proper tangible help, a very helpful and efficient use of cash.

I’m sure the immediate need for help is in Ukraine ….. but: And I’ll be the one to say it:

we can also home and employ a reasonable amount of these hard working and honest people in UK agriculture. At least until there home country is stable and rebuilt. I’m sure someone will accuse me of taking advantage with the suggestion but the facts are there…… we can all help each other.

Are you going to help refugees from conflicts in all parts of the World? Syria, Yemen Palestine?

Or are you just concerned about white Europeans?

I'm asking a genuine question. Did the people now so interested in refugees in this region do anything to help those families recently freezing to death on the Poland Belarus border?

Red Cross, Save the Children, Medicine Sans Fontieres (sic) have been helping refugees from war torn areas around the World for decades. They help all races and creeds

Yes Red Cross and Save the Children supported from this home.

Few bags of prepacked bags of various things donated in Morrisons each week for local food bank.

From now to Easter I'll be adding Easter Eggs each week aswell.

We do OK.... I think it's good to help others.

There's posts circulating on Tik Tok where folk of colour are not being allowed onto trains to leave Ukraine, reminds me of Schindlers list and Nazi Germany.
