High end vs low end LED lights?

I need 8 led oval work lights for my fastrac, every time I use them I can smell burning plastic in the cab so I thought leds would help. The dearer lights look great and I am sure are well worth the price but for the little work I do in the dark I am struggling to justify £500 plus on lighting. I’ve found some cheaper alternatives which seem ok but are between 1800 and 2250 lumens. I have no idea what this equates to in relation to the original halogen work lights. What is a good halogen replacement equivalent or slightly brighter?

I think a 55wt Halogen is 1000 lumen

55w h1 lamp is should be 1550 lumens according to ece regulations.
Lumens is really only an indicator and some cheap light just list the theoretical lumens, basically the lumen output of each led x the number of led’s. However light output does not scale like that.
When looking for lighting, it’s best to look at the lighting chart, if there is one.
The cheap led’s are ok for short term work like putting a bale in etc, but for a night shift you will notice the difference in a better quality light.

Be aware that a lot of the cheap led’s cause interference on your radio, to the point where you can’t listen to it, so something to be aware off. Will do the same to cab radios.

lighting chart example below, shows actual measured lux level

An example from the Nordic website showing the difference in lenses. floodlight vs close distance worklight.
So it’s a good idea sometimes to mix the lights to illuminate a larger area.

If your only doing occasional night work would led bulbs be as good an option as cheap led units

They would but when I took one of the lights apart all the reflective stuff fell out and they are suffering from aluminium oxidation. Otherwise that was the plan. I try my hardest not to do much night work so won’t be used often and I tend not to have the radio on so that’s not a problem. Sounds like my 1800 lumen at 19€.54 will do the job!

I’m the same, changed a few halogens to new halogens to keep them looking the same and stock and put led bulbs in the ones that overheat. A gentleman should be home with his wife after dark anyway

Hello Mattew, you can find some useful information on the Nordic Lights website here ... https://www.nordiclights.com/faq/

Check the actual lumens V the theoretical lumens as there is a large difference.

A H3 bulb (55W) produces approx 1100 lumens. The image below details the light pattern from an H3 bulb v an LED light, Scorpius Go 410, that would be similar size replacement. The LED light is only 18 Watts.

You will also find the colour temperature to be much better on an LED.

This is the new Sato Pro Nordic light https://www.retrofitparts.co.uk/go-series-led-lights/sato-pro-730.html you may only need four of these to give you a huge improvement over the halogen.

If you need any further information please let me know. Thanks Graham

Thank you Graham. I would want 8 oval lights in total as that is what is there now. I really would like to put decent quality on it but it’s 12 years old and I do as little after dark as possible so 150€ against even 4 at what would probably be about 400€ is not really justifiable for me or upper management indoors especially as we are dragging a deposit together to buy our new farm. Thank you for the info though.

Your above specs, Halogen 55w, led 18w, in theory 3 leds could replace 1 halogen using the original wiring and it would not fry it?
Even full equ 50w LEDS still dont drain the AMPS like a 55w Halogen bulb does..
Ive got some Nordics here thats 7000+lumens & there just below what a halogen drains.
But the Light from them WOW Yes there not cheap but all the good stuff is what it is.
Zero Faults in the best part of 40 units here & some must be 6/7yr old now.

I've replaced all the worklights on my ancient fleet with these , they are similar dimensions to the originals on my Case MX and MX Magnum, ive had no radio interference problems, but my radios are all DAB. For the money i'm pleased with the results.

Nicely cheap and I am sure a massive improvement on rusty reflector-ed halogens for the money, but at 45w, 2600 lumens is pretty poor as it goes.

As others have said I don’t do huge hours in dark so some prices quoted seem very hard to justify,

just got these (to replace some cheap eBay led lights which did 5 years ) no radio interference, extremely bright and look nicely made, I went slightly dearer this time old ones were bargain basement price these do look much better and are much brighter if they do 5 years again I will be happy 👍🏻
