Had a new customer this year buying bale haylage pestered for four bales to be delivered pronto wasn’t there herself on a yard to receive but her parents nightmare of a drop with an overtly male horse rider nearly ending up onto the wife’s disco on his horse. Has now decided that the single thistle and redshank stem means she gets all her money back for all four bales and wants the bale and a half she’s opened collected 7 mile away from our place, we think she was originally trying to scam. I’ve said I’d go look but she’s admimant that I don’t. Where do I stand on this, as I smell a rat.

It’s been a bad year for weed control with the weather last season and my neighbours who are also horsey seem to be good at a record breaking crop of thistles which I’ve now going to have to spend a fair bit on thistlex next season.

If you have the money and she isn't going to be a reliable future customer I would stand your ground. Nothing in your agreement at point of sale stipulated there would be zero thistles present.

Don't mind a bit of thistle in our horse hay, it means they don't gulp it down so quick.

Some horsey people are adamant that horses are very fragile and need specialist treatment. If they're hungry, they will eat it.

You get scammers in all walks of life.

Jeez, what a nightmare!

I’ve had to complain about one bale this year as half of it was very mouldy and full of fungus on opening. It was clearly a bottom one that had got wet. Texted some photos to the supplier and asked what he wanted to do as only half would have been feedable. He had a look at it when he delivered the next load knocked it off the bill.

I’d certainly ask for photos and/or have a look at it. If she’s trouble, then let her change supplier!

Simply tell her to return the items at her cost for a refund within 7 days of purchase. No return, no money. Refund on complete bales in good condition.

said this before, we used to do a bit of livery and supply the hay. Of course one year it was not good enough so I recommended a local dealer. His has was far superior , what she did not know was I had sold him my hay which he had shunted back to her

Any problems I give them the money back and tell them to source from elsewhere , saying that we don't sell haylage it's stuff of nightmares

No different to grain merchants knocking a couple of quid a tonne off, the difference is the profit margin on haylage is higher and there are plenty of customers so the odd bad one isnt too much of a problem

Welcome to my world! I will only exchange for mouldy or rank bales, it happens. Ask for photos of the issue, once strings have been cut, we will not collect but we make that quite clear at delivery. We have had plenty of calls to say that a bale is rank ‘but I had to feed some as I had nothing else’
