Housing refugees

we had the annual EHO inspection of our food premises last week. The visit went ok but was "shorter than usual" because the EHO staff have had emergency housing visits to fit into their schedule now for inspections prior to refugees arriving.
So something must be moving in Staffordshire regarding housing for them.

I volunteered a room a week or 2 ago & had a follow up email today, it sounds like things are moving slowly.

I've been asked by friends why I've done it.

About 20 years ago we had Romanian au pairs with no problems.

Also if it was your Mother or sister or children that had been made homeless, I'm sure you'd hope somebody would help.

Do you have to agree to put up the husband as well when he has finished fighting?

I was just wondering that as the government have said they can stay for up to three years are you agreeing to house the husband as well if he turns up?
The wording is UP to 3 years. I’d take in for example an elderly married couple. I think the fighting age is up to 60 but I’d guess plenty of over 60s are determined to fight
Yes I would house the husband, I’m sure he’d be a keen worker like most Europeans.

Let's hope you're right, I'd hate to think some hardened killer turns up on your doorstep with a bunch of flowers. Could be a long 3 years!

I really admire those willing and able to host strangers for a minimum of 6 months. We sometimes struggle hosting friends and family we know well for more than a weekend! Remember to tell your insurance company as it may invalidate your existing insurance. I think you should also have a tenancy agreement. In very very rare cases un-vetted occupants could decide to change locks whilst host is out and claim occupation leaving their host effectively homeless.. it’s sad fact one has to consider the possible risks posed by the <0.01% when trying to do the right thing. Hopefully Ukraine will very soon be a safe and viable country again

You really are a case. Each refugee is sponsored and granted a visa individually, so it would be up to the sponsor if another family member was added on - they can't just turn up. But if by 'hardened killer' you mean someone who has defended their country and families against a tyrant then I am sure most of us would let them in.

Do you have the same attitude to any member of our armed forces? You only have to agree to house for 6 months and even then if things go pear shaped then it can be re-arranged with help from local council. Some people - either the original fleeing refugees or any ex-fighters, are going to have severe mental trauma and there will be some placements that don't work out but the system is being set up to provide that safety net.

I don't usually bother to reply to any of your posts as you are such a tw*t and I won't again, but you've just tipped me over the edge this afternoon. Must be because I've been watching more traumatised, confused, tearful, mourning, innocent citizens whose very existence has been made hell by Putin.

I'm just pointing out the possible reality of the situation, it's all very well very kind hearted people welcoming women & children into their homes but it's important that you are aware of what could possibly follow, it would not be right to ask them to leave when settled if hubby turns up & he is not quite what you expected.

Do you have any compassion?

Have you ever thought how lucky you are to live in a free country.

We have a few static caravans on our farm & I've recently rented one to an Afghan war veteran (infantry & 2 tours). He works in one of the units on our farm.
He has PTSD, life isn't easy for him. He's also possibly killed someone, I don't know - I haven't asked him about Afghan.

I also have a friend who is South African, he served in the Fusiliers & did a tour of Afghan. He openly admits to a few kills in Afghan. It doesn't worry me that someone who has killed the enemy is on our farm & armed.

I let him stalk deer on our farm. He left South Africa as a teenager, his Dad realised it was much safer to get his family out of there.

Maybe I'm just a fool, but I think people deserve a chance if you can help them.

I agree, what I was simply pointing out was that many women & older people were offering to take refugees into their homes perhaps without thinking through all the possible outcomes, no one has said the husbands will not follow the wives & it’s something they should take into account as not so easy to change your mind at a later stage.
With a shortage of homes already in this country as the migrants being housed in hotels shows it will often be in people’s homes that they will need to be housed.
Let’s hope this remains a free country without Johnson dragging us into a far more serious war!

That's fair comment.
I suspect some will have seen 350/person & thought £££.
If I was like that I would be increasing rents on statics to £350/person/month - I'm not!
If I can help someone in their hour of need, I will.

I think you will find it’s £350 per family per month which would hardly cover food bills.

I think i have found a family to come. I don't have their details yet but a friend of a friend has linked us up.
Fingers crossed for them
how are things progressing? Is the process proving straight forward?
I followed up the request from Fieldbee that @steveR posted up earlier.
Initially, it sounded like the Ukrainians were migrating to the west of their country in the hope of returning home relatively soon. Fieldbee had taken over a hotel for their staff and families.
Watching the news, it doesn't look like a quick fix out there now. This morning had an email from them asking if we would be able to accommodate a lady and her 11yr old son.
