How confident do you feel?

Do you feel more confident about farming in 2020 than you did in 2019?

  • Yes - I feel more confident than I did in 2019

  • No - I feel less confident than I did in 2019

  • It's all the same and I just want to get crops in the ground and animals fed!

I think its fair to say farming confidence has stagnated in recent years amid Brexit uncertainty, but are you feeling more confident now we a leaving and have a set government for the next 5 years - or do you feel all the uncertainty is still there with ELMS and the agriculture bill?

Feel free to explain why - I generally feel more confident about things, but its tainted with a lot of trepidation about all the changes we face as an industry.

Not feeling very confident. Battling with machinery that's well past its sell by date, half OSR failed and nothing else drilled. A big spring barley year isn't much to look forward to. Feels more like a managed decline than making progress. Carrying on for the time being but a couple more big unplanned bills and we are probably out.
Philosophical about it though. We are doing all we can and if that doesn't work, well it just doesn't. We tried. No regrets.
Better get on.

?
Very little winter wheat in
No winter barley in
OSR largely written off
Expensive spring seed coupled with lower yields
Uncertainty around ELM
General poor mood all round here

Big question is do I want to offer my children a career on the farm?

Currently pushing them towards academia to get good qualifications and career then allow them to farm for the quality of life if they want to raise a family here.

A bit more like have your cake and eat it.

So long as I can manage the place till I’m mid 60’s on my own.:nailbiting::dead:
I’m in a very similar position to you, I was hoping one of the might come into the farm but secretly hoping they will do something else at least to start with.
This whole vegan thing is really starting to get my goat

If you are ready to call it quits' in UK, I spotted a decent looking wheat farm in South Dakota, asking $6m for 5417 acres, 4 bed/2 bath main house, grain storage looks' like a deal for someone.
haydenoutdoors.com are the listing agents'

Roger what would 6 million USD be in UK money and what fees/charges would go on top?

Quite confident.
Pig prices are quite good.
Feed prices stable.
My herd performance has been pretty poor lately, but is turning round so output should be up and I've still been making money at the poor level.
Thankfully, I'm not reliant on BPS.

Sorry if it sounds selfish but should I be filling the the straw shed for next year now?

Similiar thoughts here... None of my 3 want to farm, all of them are in a good place regarding work and will hopefully progress quickly in their careers. They all like and appreciate having the farm as a leisure type resource, and they undertsand that it has the potential to do this into the future and pay it's way.... mostly!!;)
