Hydraulic hoses.

Called in to have a couple of 1 inch pipes about 2ft long made up to replace a burst pipe on the hedge cutter. Took the old pipes and he made them up while I waited so good service. I wasn’t in a rush so would have collected next day if required but they had nothing else to do so made them while I waited. Just received the invoice and it £177 which I though was a bit expensive. Out of interest had a look how much they would be from flow fit and with delivery came to £78. I appreciate supporting the local business but at over twice the price it hurts a little. Are flow fit usually that much cheaper or is my local man expensive? I appreciate he has to make a living and don’t mind paying if he has to come out when broken down etc. Would you question the bill or just pay? I know he doesn’t do the invoicing so could be a mistake with the pricing. Thoughts please

i would question it. the last time i had an issue we fetched a length of star tube 300 ml long from local dealer, got the invoice £97 so questioned him, o i can see whats happened therve booked a 3 metre length end of story no offer of credit and no apologie. its the last thing he sold us and we have to go 15 miles to the next dealer. we bought a second hand bedding machine with his supplied by sticker on it that soon came off!

Years ago I got some hoses from a local supplier and felt like I had benn rode bare back, was in the city and called to a hydraulic hose supplier and asked them to make two hoses for me to the same spec at half the price. Went back to the original supplier and queried the excessive cost only to be told that they used a two piece fitting which they charged £15 +vat for per piece where as the city supplier used a single piece fitting @ £15 all in...................................................................................

I think you're hoses are too dear but by how much I'm not sure. There's a lot of variables when making hoses up and you've got to know you're comparing like for like. Single wire hose, two wire, multi spiral, compact hose and thats without general quality of hoses. Its not so bad thinking you've paid a bit over the odds if you've got real quality hoses made up that are gonna last, but if you've paid top dollar for cheap sh*te........

My local is prohibitively expensive when it comes to having hoses made. Sure it's high quality, but my god the prices  I've been meaning to stock myself up with cheap Bareco hose and screw on fittings, none of my stuff is high use and my machines all run on cheap UTTO, I'm prepared to takethe risk.

Back before I knew how much hydraulic stuff was, I had a couple of 3m 3/8" hoses made up with couplings on each end so I could add a 3rd service to my little loader tractor (it already had a 3 way valve bank). I figured it would be a couple of hundred bucks.....boy was I wrong. Just those hoses alone were 1/5th the price of the whole tractor.

2 feet of 1" 4 wire hose with 1" straight female BSP fittings at each end is £30-91+vat on the Hydraulic Megastore custom hose builder. £7 for delivery.

Basically if you go to a local hose shop you're paying through the nose for having it immediately. If you can wait a day or two then online services such as the above win hands down. To be honest the difference in prices means its worth buying various common hoses for critical machines in advance and holding the ready made hose in stock yourself.

Where are all these big prices coming in from? Our main pipe and industrial supplier only charges for the component parts and assembles the pipe foc..! And they run their entire product line of everything you can think of to your door next day.. foc.. even just a jubilee clip! Unbelievably good service.

Extortionate pricing of hoses and fittings in my case. Assembly of hoses used to be free, now there's a $10 charge per hose.

Here's the latest lot I had done, I wonder how it compares to the stuff on your side of the world? (all prices are +15% GST)
2 Wire Hydraulic Hose - 1/2" - $36.00 per meter
Hydraulic Ferrule 1/2" - $11.20 each
Hydraulic Swage Elbow Swept 90 Deg - $46.50 each
Hydraulic Swage FMale Cone 60 Deg. - $19.40 each

That is absolutely nonsense money.. we would be quarter of that or less, for top quality. How many dollars to our pound? And what does a 150hp tractor run for an hour inc fuel over your way?

$1.95 NZD to 1 GBP.

No idea on the tractor thing. Diesel is $1.26 + GST per litre as of 31 September.....probably more now.
