My drawings wouldn’t be anywhere near that, but I also appreciate that many of my ‘living costs’ are paid for by the business. As a saddo, I do very little mileage that isn’t to do with the business in some way, and my (farmhouse) rent is included in the farm. My wife pays for all the food, from the wage the business pays her.
I thought I was the only 1 that paid my wife monthly!🤦‍♂️🤣

We don't have a joint account

Life often throws curved balls, jobs can go, partners leave or die. You can't forsee the future, yes you can try but it can still turn to sh1t.
Yep but do some even try to account for what may happen or do they think thats ok gov will pay ?
Its like farmers that after a month or two dry have fed all there winter feed so start the winter with nothing and moan about it like two months dry never happend before.

You pay your wife?!

Mine has a roof over her head and counts herself lucky!
Next thing you’ll be telling us you buy her something at Christmas as well!

Half our village used to run a tab at the village shop when I was a kid in the 50s -60s
absolutely, but that was back when people didn't have finance on cars, property, store cards and credit cards. Food, then, was the biggest household expense.
Now food has become such a small part of the household budget (see example above). To loan money on the weekly shop is bordering on irresponsible

Can live in a smaller house. Can't live on no food.
100% agree. To be honest that was the part I was struggling to put a cost on, having been lucky to start in an earlier age when property was more affordable. I would hate to be starting out in working life now. Not that it matters to the overall picture though - half that and you still have a really challenging budget to meet.

I hope some of these sharks get a haircut when their customers declare themselves bankrupt. Sounds like folk need help to manage money rather than borrow more.
Was hearing on the BBC of folks living in poverty on “only” £23k a year,,,,,, almost my double drawings for my living costs!
Just thinking, my house is paid for, no rent or mortgage to pay. 23k , would you lose half in rent/ mortgage? Then run a car pay council tax , electric gas . Mmm not looking so easy .

If I had to pay a mortgage or rent I’d easily use up £23k. It would easily double my outgoings. How folks manage paying some of these rents and mortgages I’ll never know.
Rents and mortgages are infested beyond all reality in my view. I was determined never to have a mortgage or pay much rent so I lived in cheap rented accommodation (house shares mostly) till I was 35 trying to build savings to buy a property outright. I eventually did that but it’s the smallest bungalow in the village and my only independent asset. I live and work on this farm but 75% of it doesn’t belong to me.

Lots live on well under 23k?
And don't claim a penny?
I'm sure, spent this morning sorting out my mother in law's logs for the woodburner this winter. About 300 euros worth of wood will heat the cottage this winter. 2 little bottles of gas for the cooker and a bit of electric. We did put a lot of insulation in and that's more than paid for itself. Cool in summer and warm in winter. I know a lot of people are not in that position.
